Hi Guys. Need help evaluating two offers:

1. McKinsey - Associate in Risk Consulting - $165K base/30K sign-on. NYC/Chicago.
2. Facebook - Program Manager in Security and Privacy - $160K base/$100K RSUs over 4 years/$20K sign-on. Bay Area

I have 6 YOE at Deloitte in Cyber since graduating college. Has always been a desire to work at McK but don’t plan to stay in Consulting long term. Was all set to join McK until this offer came along.

Any advice on what factors I need to consider?

OP you said that your worst week at Deloitte was 55 hours which is considered good at Mck for some obscure reason.

Cyber security at Facebook will opens you all door for tech so if consulting is not your endgame you should go straight there.

It’s surely a hard thing to say no to McKinsey but the other option you have is great.

With regards to comp, at Mck it will probably evolves faster but you will also work 1.3/1.5 the hours. So not necessarily worth it.

I’d recommend you Facebook to be honest

Thanks for your input. I never thought I’d be in a position to be able to reject a McK offer.

I have a lot of thinking to do, and most people around me are suggesting the same.

Congrats! That's a good problem to have :) if you go to Mck after 2 years, you can pivot to tech or any other indusrty, you can stay in consulting if you want to, you can grow more on your role (I don't know cyber space well but if there are new trends I think you'll have chance to learn and practice them at Mck vs FB). I assume you are in your late 20s, you must have some energy left in you to go for consulting for 2-3 more years and then decide if you want to exit to industry of not. Btw i live in the Bay area 160 base is nothing. I also heard their work environment is toxic. (Remember the guy who committed suicide?)

like

I just took an offer at FB, 130k base at IC4. Honestly hurts to hear that “160 base is nothing” as I will be earning far less than that as I assume many others are as well. I’m also late twenties.

If comp is most important to you, go work at Facebook. If you care about working at an ethical company, reject both offers.

LOL spoken like a true McKinsey person A2.

likefunny

“Don’t plan to stay in consulting long term” is the only factor that makes the decision for you.

likesmartfunny

Fb1 is right, all consulting firms are actively helping companies like Fb and Twitter, and are increasingly desperate for this business and money. There is no moral high ground in this situation, and I’d say McK might actually be worse considering it’s work as a government contractor for some very… choice governments.

like

At the end even McKinsey folks leave to join tech.

Plus better work life balance; you will have a life and time for your hobby/passion.

Thanks, A1.

10 years ago, working in a consulting for Deloitte was a dream. So, this is just unprecedented. Gonna do some thinking and make some decisions soon.

like

Wow! Why would you want to jump to McK as an associate after 6 years in consulting and if you’re planning on leaving?

likesmarthelpful

Prepare for a potentially tough first 1.5-2 years working as an ASC (tough as you go back in time working on your own), but if you go through you’ll be rewarded.

helpful

Congrats! You have a tough decision a head of you. I think I would go with the Facebook offer just because it is a managerial role.

Oh okay. Good to know.

Join FB ... it’s a brand image for all the product companies - if you want to be in consulting be in mck

Even if you are working in privacy or any department - consider yourself involved with the org which is currently having the best of best in the world...

6 years back - one of my tech friends told me to invest in FB stock which is around 80$ or so. At that time fb is taking heat and no good business - I asked him why ?

This is a great answer he told me I still remember when evaluating companies — HE said always trust companies with the most talented employees - they will figure something out .. they are paying the most with the toughest interview process and selecting the top of the line. That is the reason UBER and Netflix all these next level companies will never go away because of the crowd they keep attracting.. they are solving problems everyday which no one has solutions yet - in any DEPARTMENT

Lotta folks DMing me asking how I got the offers.
1. Facebook was via referral. A friend referred me. Got a call within 2 weeks. Interview process was 3 weeks to offer.
2. McK I just applied on their website. Recruiter reached out within a week. Help set up case coaching classes with ex-McK folks. Interviewed 3 weeks later. 3 weeks for interviews. Offer soon after.

I personally would go for McK but that’s because I have no idea what to do with my life and McK still feels more broadly useful than working at fb

like

Take McKinsey and base/live in Chicago (if that’s an option). Better quality of life.

That salary in the Bay Area will have you living out of a closet.

If you don’t plan on staying in consulting - how closely aligned is Facebook with your target role post-consulting? If very aligned choose it, if not go McK for a year and then pivot

like

Gotcha M1. I need to think about this. Consulting came naturally to me and have been a stellar performer the last few years, but COVID has killed my motivation and drive. I’m sloppy and try to coast most of the time. I really can’t do that at McK or their clients.

FB is a guaranteed return to office by September, so that’s something I’m also motivated by.

Facebook all the way

If your goal isn’t to stay in consulting and you think there’s a decent chance you could build a career at Facebook I’d go where you’d like to be longer term. There’s opportunity cost to consider, and spending all that time building a network at McK to know for sure you’ll leave and have to do the same elsewhere just seems inefficient. Usually takes a couple years at each job to really build that network and find your advocates.

like

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I considered this. One of the reasons I stayed this long at D was the network. Now, I think I’ve built as much as I could and half my network has left and joined Tech companies. Consulting is definitely not for me in the long run.

Facebook for sure

Facebook

Facebook. The name itself is already good enough to net you a different FAANG or big tech opportunity if you want to leave for it. I don't see McKinsey offering anything more

Don’t come to McK if you’ve already experienced consulting life at D and you’re planning to leave McK anyway

like

Curious - why?

How to think of the RSUs if you plan to be there for the long vs medium term?
Is it a 25k bonus for the next 4 years and you will not get anything further? Or can you expect to get another $100k on RSUs each year and each time it’s a new 4 year vesting schedule?

So if you are there for 10+ years then you got a $100k bonus each year

funny

Not sure how that works, but have friends there who talk about how generous some of these RSUs down the road can be, so only time will tell.
