Consulting Exit Opportunities

Hi guys! I got passed over for an M promotion at Big 4(6 years post MBA experience) I have a broad strategy and servjce innovation background. Want to start looking outside (preferably tech) but unsure what skillsets to build up/focus on. What comparable positions exist in FAANG and what skills do they look for? Do I need to get any tech trainings in place?

Big 4 will always screw you on promos given the chance from what I’ve seen and personally experienced. They dangle the carrot of ‘next year’ and before you know it your way behind your peers that you graduated with

Whoa. 6 years? Did you start at your firm right after mba? If so, I think they are trying to tell you something.

Yup, right after MBA. 2 years C to SC and 4 years SC to M was the norm. This year due to COVID most promotions are deferred. I'm a high performer by their definitions however I feel done! With the volume of work I do here I feel I can have a better impact and growth in industry :)

Sorry to hear, I got passed over twice (two years in a row) at one of the big 4s despite being a high performer too. I quit and went to industry. You can do it. Good luck.

Thank you. I don't want to be pressed into a corner before taking the risky exit

Happened with me as well OP - 5 yrs post MBA. Just start looking and you’ll be okay — I don’t have tech background and have interviews coming up with G and F

Why do people with zero tech experience want this? Why don't you move to the bay and get staffed on a tech project

For everyone saying they were high performers and got passed over for promotion multiple times. Why do you think that is? Same boat here. It's often little things and want to start off on the right foot at next gig

Yes but the people who overly push promotion case vs trying to be better for the sake of it are perceived as selfish and not team players

Did you ever work on a tech client let alone a faang client?

Move to the bay and get staffed on them if you are so serious about it. Don't sit in your bedroom and hit click

Sorry to hear. Why did you start as a C vs SC if you were post MBA? Echoing D1, what is your industry/subject matter expertise?

SC1 is right. Not a feeder school, 6 years to Manger is a norm for my team/college etc. Would have made M had it not been for COVID but it still stings. In terms of skillsets -- right now it is industry agnostic (e.g. digital transformation), leaning towards tech and financial services strategy.

Yeah I think you need to leave. Either go to another consulting firm or to a tech firm. Try to pick up a skill that is in demand

Reaction Icon Like
Arrow Icon

Yup that's really the plan. Another year of 14 hour days is not going to happen

OP, sorry to hear that, it is time to look for your next gig actively. Try for Product Manager roles in Tech. Consulting skills are easily transferrable into such roles.
