I teach 5th grade and our four 5th grade classes have done a Battle of the Books for several years. It’s highly motivational and loads of fun. Our library media specialist compiles a list of 10 books from different genres and reading levels. Each class is broken into 3 or 4 teams. The teams decide who will read which books assuming that the team will have collectively read all 10 books by the challenge deadline. Then each classroom holds a challenge when questions pertaining to the books are poised and the team that answers the most questions win for the classroom. (The media specialist writes the questions.) Then there is a grade level round. The 4 classroom winning teams face off in front of the entire grade level. Our principal is the master of ceremony and he hams if up with trivia questions sprinkled throughout the event to increase audience attention. Parents donate little prizes (gift cards to Sweet Frog, etc.) for the winners and a raffle. All students are put into the raffle. This is an event that is exclusive to our 5th grade and the kids look forward to it like they look forward to the holidays! Very fun. We do this in the spring when we teachers are wearing down and need a little reprieve😀.

This sounds great! I love the parent donations and the raffle. I’m definitely going to bring that to my home and school association. Thank you!

I was tag teaming with a teacher two years ago. We met with students once a month to go over the novel for the month. They would bring in a list of specific questions and we’d have a great conversation. This was my intro to battle of the books. Sadly schools closed a month before our competition.

I was told they used to do it in my district so I’m really interested in trying it out. Thank you!

I'm thinking of leaving Big 4 to go to a boutique firm. I have 2 years of experience. They are bringing me in at the Senior level. Smaller market. Ill be doing consulting on tax credits. They asked me for a salary range- is 75k-85k reasonable? or is that too low?

I have a salary range in mind for a new role based on online research and target increase from my comp now. But my research shows the data points are for salaries in HCOL areas. Do I need to adjust what I ask for if it’s a remote role and I’m not in HCOL city? Don’t want to overshoot and lose a great opportunity.
