You can’t get secondary insurance that covers it unless you’re in a handful of states where the marketplace plans have to cover it. Otherwise your employer decides if it’s covered.
Many do travel abroad for it. Many European countries are relatively inexpensive at $5-6k per round all in (Spain, Croatia, Greece etc). Mexico is also an option though a bit more expensive, especially in beach towns vs cities. There are Facebook groups that focus on this you might find helpful.
In the US, CNY is one of the cheapest clinics. Many travel there and they list their prices online.
I have not travelled but looked into Greece for IVF. It’s about 6k US for a full IVF cycle and you would need to be a remote worker to make it work or have a 2-3 weeks of vacation time. I’ve also looked into CNY as a low cost option. It’s in NY.
I do not live in a state that would allow me to buy an individual plan with IVF benefits unfortunately.
I am leaving my current company 1) because I’ve wanted a new job for some time now (70%) 2) because I maxed out my IVF benefits (30%)
I did prioritize companies with good IVF benefits and was able to land a better role that offers Progeny fertility insurance. It might be worth either changing companies or picking up a part time job at a company that offers fertility benefits like Amazon, Starbucks or tractor supply store.
Having a part time job for a short amount of time sure as hell beats paying 25k- 100k for treatment.
Interesting point about switching companies after you max out the benefit. I should know this, but I don’t. Can your new employer’s insurer charge you more or otherwise limit your benefits due to infertility?
This is great info. Thanks!
