Hi. I am 23 living in the Bay Area and my comp is $70k but I live with my parents so am able to save and max out my Roth 401k and Roth IRA. How would you suggest investing what’s leftover?

Set aside an emergency fund (probably minimal since you live with parents). After that, max out your HSA as well.

If you still have money leftover, open a brokerage account and put it all into an index fund like VTI (and crypto if you want).

like

I would max out HSA if you can get one and have an emergency fund.

I moved back in with my parents in August, and my mom and stepfather have demanded monthly rent. They are in no way poor at this moment in time, and in my opinion it’s f*cked up to demand your child pay rent. I bought a VR headset a couple weeks back and my mom increased the rent because “I can afford it.” Is this normal? I honestly feel used. Fwiw I’ve worked since I was 13, and hustled my entire life.

new to investing. have done some research - reading blogs and a few books on investing. I still have the question of do individuals that take the index fund route… do you all purchase the same funds for different accounts? Example, would you invest in VTSAX across a brokerage and roth account, or would you take a different approach for each account?

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled
