Tax tech will own compliance before long. Tech skills will float, compliance skills will sink.
I think tax tech is a slippery slope - depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want to learn data analytics skills like Alteryx/Tableau/Power BI or help firms create their internal tax applications and be a part of a “tax technology team”? The latter is probably a dead end unless you stay with the company forever. At pwc there are teams that help guide developers to create proprietary tax applications specific to only pwc. I would shy away from that because your job mainly consists of project management and not so much technical skills. I’d say it also depends on where you’re at in your career - if you’re already very comfortable with compliance then doing something tax tech might be a little easier. If you’re early in your career what benefit will you add to automating compliance if you don’t even know compliance?
It’s the same dynamic with pwc’s tax tech team from my understanding - mainly project management. I think a lot of people above senior in any group struggle with project management! Myself included lol!
