Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

Do you guys have any tips on getting interviews when looking to career pivot? I work as a consulting actuary and I’m looking to pivot into M&A or growth strategy. Still pretty early in my career so I’m happy to step into an analyst-equivalent role. I figured my analytical experience and skill set is fairly transferable but I’m barely getting interviews with and without referrals. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone feel they interview poorly because of their nerves, even if you prepare prior to the interview and find good examples of your skills and experience to match the role requirements? My nerves always get the best of me and I tend to ramble when I’m nervous. I had a phone interview with the hiring manager and members of the team that the role would be working with and I feel like I shot myself in the foot a few times. 93500/yr salary w/ 10k sign-on

Response:
84800/yr with 10k sign-on

My go/no go mental number:
88500/yr with 7.5k signon

Based on my conversation with HR, I've maxed out the base pay number. Does it sound reasonable to come back with 84800/yr with 12.5k sign-on since they weren't close to the base pay number I was looking for?
