Hi, I am in my first year of college and i’m wanting to go to law school after I complete my bachelors. I’m stuck between majors to choose in order to best suit myself for law school. Would political science or english be a better choice for someone who’s interested in the law field ?

Liberal arts programs tend to have classes that are dual listed, so take advantage of taking those cross listed for both political science & English! See what professors you enjoy the most from each department as well as what kind of research those departments are doing (especially if you’re looking to do a thesis or research).

Law school cares less about major and more about GPA, LSAT & passion for whatever area of law you’re looking to go into. Recommendations are really important, so being able to establish strong relationships with past professors is crucial for great recs letters to law school.

My business degree has allowed me to be very marketable post law school. It opens up a lot of career paths that other degrees wouldn’t (at least for JD Advantage jobs & and working in bbbs). If you KNOW you want to go the law firm route, I’ve seen plenty of English majors etc from ivy league schools at midsize firms in metro areas. That degree, IMO, just makes you less marketable if you don’t go the route of practicing attorney.

Follow up, If your school allows you to get a “pre-law” minor pick whatever major you want.

What type of law do you intend to go into? That should heavily factor into the choices you are making right now.

I’m trying to go into divorce law.

Don't do it. I am sure you have heard that 100 times. But don't. And if you are stubborn please take an internship or two or three where you actually see how it is to practice.

Otherwise, honestly, it doesn't matter too much what your undergrad degree is. With the exception that if you happen to later decide you want to do patent law, you generally need a degree in the sciences

As someone who’s about to graduate from law school—study what you’re interested in and what you think you’d be good at. I’d also encourage you to explore other fields before you enroll. I have a degree in accounting and finance, and ended up realizing midsummer of 2L that I didn’t want to practice. I’m glad that I did have a background that allowed me to pivot out of the law earlier rather than later.

Of the two, I would think political science would be the better option. But you can't go wrong either way!

Best of luck to you on your career journey OP! Becoming a lawyer is an awesome goal.

Just stumbled across this thread—3L here. I second UVA1 above. I had a business background from undergrad and that helped me in so many different ways that an English or poli sci degree could not. Explore what you’re interested in. Also, god bless you for wanting to be a divorce attorney

Hello people!

It’s been a good journey ever since I started to work with a team where our major goal is implementing digital banking solutions. But Im part of business team and not product team. Now I’m more interested in the digital products and have enrolled my self for this UI/UX designer course as I want to change my career trajectory and don’t want to work as key relationships manager in the business team anymore. Can anyone share their experience and feedback, what more I need to do ??

Looking for advice…I have been told that transitioning into L&D should be “easy” given by experience and skills (20+ years in education as a teacher, counselor, district administrator, higher ed. program Director, Academic Affairs Assoc. Dean plus part-time instructional designer). I have an EdD in Leadership (School-system) and an MA in Counseling Psychology.

I have applied for various position levels from specialist to Director with no luck. Any ideas for what level I should be applying for?
