Congrats OP. Its a little more complicated than KPMGs formula but not much. What plans are available to you? For each plan, calculate the costs assuming you’re going to need tens of thousands on healthcare which you will with a pregnancy. So cost for each plan is annual premiums + deductible under family plan + coinsurance amount after deductible is reached (if applicable and up to whatever maximum there is in plan). Also factor in any firm benefits you might get, for example, often high deductible plans come with an hsa and a firm contribution. In short, become familiar with the plans offered to you and do some math. In my experience the high deductible plans are often cheaper in these situations, perhaps counterintuitively.

Yup. Missed the coinsurance part. I’ve always on $0 coinsurance for so long for most, I forgot about this.

I have done the math. If you work for Deloitte, and if you have money in hand to pay high deductible then basic UHC healthplan would be most economical if others in your family don’t fall sick much. Otherwise go for HDHP. And max out your HSA in both cases.

And congrats, kids are such a blessing 😊

Monthly premium * 12 + max deductible for mom + baby Whatever comes out lowest is the best.

It’s just depend on hospital. For my first kid, the bill comes out maxing it for a stay in nursery which we used for 20 mins. And a bunch of other charges. For second, there’s no such thing and only cost us about 20% of the max. You can always try to call the hospital and figure things out with an estimate but it’s not an easy process.

Just changed employers. Previous employer uses Fidelity for 401k and new one uses Vanguard. Are there are distinct pros and cons of rolling over into the Vanguard 401k vs transferring to an IRA account?

I want to FIRE. IRA and 401k are beyond my definition of the ‘RE’ idea since they can only be withdrawn without penalty at 55. Is the only other way to save for retiring at 40-55 an individual brokerage account and just accept the tax upon withdrawal?

Potentially stupid but serious question alert: I want to move my money from checking to an index fund (e.g., SP500 type) to build passively vs. it just sitting in my bank. My questions arise around how liquid is this (e.g., if I need to make a large purchase and take a portion of the investment) and what are tax implications for short term withdrawals/selling (e.g., I invest 10k, sell 2k to make a purchase, does this actually help financially or does short term taxes /other negate any benefits)?

Any advice? What to look out for? How to pick a good place? Where are you working/why do you like it
