Hi, I am working in F500 company and moving from US to Canada due to visa constraints. I have been offered 10% increase to move from US salary to Canada salary. Is it a norm? Do companies actually convert the salaries using some Fx rate or they give around this same bracket. Really appreciate some opinions or stories if they have been in the same boat.

Do you know if the 10% increase is calculated based on your current salary in USD, just converted to CAD? $1 = $1.26 CAD right now so wondering if their offer is legit or based on creative math where conversion rate factors.

Do you have the option to say no and remain on USD?

I have to anyway move to Canada because I don’t have the work visa for US anymore. Is it possible to work on a US payroll from Canada?

It is not, tax laws don’t allow for it if you don’t have an authorization in the US

Actually there is no conversion. There are kind of using a band to offer me a number which happens to be a 10% hike from my US number.

So assuming: 1.) the increase is apples to apples and is a true 10% increase 2.) you have to move based on visa requirements anyways Is your question really whether the 10% could be increased? To 12%? 15%? Something else? Either way, congrats on the raise!

No it isn’t apple to apple. So assuming my pay was 100K USD, I have been offered 110K CAD.

My question here is what norms are followed when an employee gets transferred from US to Canada for salary conversion?

110k CAD = 86.8k USD. It’s not an increase. It may be adjusted to cost of living in Canada but you’d gross ~87% of what you do now.

Yeah exactly. So I want to understand what companies do in these cases. Do they convert using some fx rate.

Being in sales, I’d say the norm is, whatever is best for the company. It’s your job to be sure it’s good for you too. They generally calculate the cost of living based on the data source most favorable to them. I’d find a cost of living calculator favorable to you and see if the new salary holds up. If you can get time with someone working in Canada, doing the same job, or a range; you’d have concrete bargaining chips to play.

You get paid based on local rates and market. Had to go to Australia under similar circumstances - they gave me a 40% cut because that was the average pay in Aus back then.

I haven't heard of this before but it sounds very considerate. I think they would convert it based on your previous salary not the Fx rate.
