I worked in HR for 11 years (PT now), and my understanding was that background checks should be completed after the job was offered and accepted, not before. Additionally, our employment attorneys indicated we should only pull credit checks on employees that would have a reasonable need to have one.
A financial report can be ask for, it is never done until you have a offer in hand
Depending on your state this isn't legal. Credit reports can be checked prior to giving you a job offer but never before the interview process. I'm certain checking before the interview violates safe handling guidelines for most states.
Either way, I'd just avoid this company if I were you. Pretty sketch vibes
In a former company credit checks were done pre offer, but consented as part of the application process and at the expense of the company..never asked a candidate to bring their own.
Credit checks can no longer be performed unless the role requires you to have access to the bank account or other heavy financial tasks for the organization. The company must also provide an offer, either verbal or written, before running any background check.
I would run away from this company as fast as you can for the following reasons:
1) depending on the state using a credit report as part of a hiring decision is illegal except for in a few specific situations. Illinois is a state with a law about this.
2) the type of credit report you can access for yourself is different from an employment credit report. For example, an employment credit report doesn’t include a credit score.
3) if the company can legally utilize a credit report for this position they should pay for it.
Than you all. I thought I was going crazy.
You aren't going crazy. What a strange request. I'm glad you thought to check with others before agreeing to that check. There are plenty of other positions available.

You shouldn’t have to do that until the offer phase
Not normal and not always legal!
Absolutely, I got asked for one when I was working to get an offer for a financial institution
Absolutely not
I got a similar email and haven't replied. I was thinking it was a Scam.
Yes I have. It is not that big of a deal. I would provide it.
My first employer when I started in recruiting ran a credit check.
