Hi - I’m currently reviewing an IT analyst job offer at Orion Health (an IT company specializing in healthcare software). I have approx. 2 years of experience, and I’m being offered a base salary of $85,000. Would it be realistic/fair to negotiate to $90,000, or is that asking for too much? Any thoughts?

I always tell my wife to negotiate. I feel it shows that you know the value you can bring to an organization. Is there a range?

I’m not familiar with the IT field ,but I hope someone with better knowledge than me can give you a sound answer.

Thank you for this advice! I wish Glassdoor was more specific about currencies too. I live in Canada, therefore I’m getting paid in Canadian dollar. If the salary reports on Glassdoor is in US dollar, could that be taken into consideration as well? I don’t plan on getting into the currency conversation with them, but I believe that it does have some sort of impact on the full value of the compensation, especially if it’s an international company. And you’re absolutely right that women are conditioned not to negotiate. I know several male counterparts who wouldn’t even think twice about negotiating, and here I am, very anxious about it. I’ve got to start somewhere, and if not now, when?
Thanks again for your insight! This is very helpful :)

It never hurts to ask. The worst they will say is no and then you can work with your boss eventually on a plan to get you to the salary you want. It’s a little over 5% what you’re requesting which is not unreasonable. But make sure to state you feel with your education and responsibilities of position. Don’t lean on two years experience as the reason.

Thank you for your response! I will keep this mind when communicating with them. I’ll make a list of things I’m able to bring to the table besides the 2 years of experience :)

Always say you erre hoping for 10,000 more but open to negotiation

Thank you for your response! This is great information :)

Is this Toronto? This is way less. I was making 70k without an experience, 100 after one year and then promoted to 130.

like

Thank you for your response! Yes, it’s in Toronto! Which roles were you offered with the base salaries you have indicated? And for which company (if you don’t mind)? The role I’m currently getting an offer for is for Service Delivery Analyst in Change and Release Management. If you’re a developer, I reckon you’re probably going to get paid more, but I’m not 100% certain.

You should always negotiate unless you gave them a range and the offer is already for the top number. If you haven’t discussed specific numbers before the offer stage, they likely left room for negotiation.

First, you need to get the recruiter or, ideally, the hiring manager on the phone, which you’ll do by sending an email indicating that you have questions about the offer. Open by thanking them for the offer and expressing enthusiasm for the role or company. Your ask should be concise and include a “because” that doesn’t reference your personal finances. “Would you be able to increase the base salary to 90k because I’d like this to be a longterm role?” Follow that with silence.

The most likely response will be that they need to check with someone else. Any response other than an outright “no”, which is rare, is positive. Ask when and how you should follow up. On the off chance you’re told that they won’t increase the base salary, ask if there’s any flexibility with the incentive comp or signing bonus.

Raise all of your major asks in the initial call. They may schedule a separate follow up call where you finalize the offer, but it’s considered bad form to add more asks later.

This is such great advise, especially coming from a fellow woman who had similar experience. It’s hard to start negotiating when you have been conditioned not to. I see many articles about women being paid less than their male counterparts, but there’s not a lot of information on how to 1) break out of this cycle 2) properly negotiate. Furthermore, the data on gender wage/salary discrepancies in various roles are very hard to find, and when you do find some data, you’re unsure of the accuracy. I hope companies start to be more transparent when I’m comes to salary ranges, as well as get rid of the “we don’t talk about salary” culture among colleagues. I think it’s beneficial for everyone to be able to discuss their salaries with their colleagues; only the businesses benefit from their employees frowning upon discussion of salaries among each other.

I'm working as a full stack developer but I started as an analyst. I still believe you're slightly underpaid considering your experience. Im working for a series A startup
