Hi. I have a question. In a world where COVID is under control, how would you feel if your companies went back to being fully in the office? But maybe others were adopting a hybrid model- some days remote, some days in the office. Would it make you want to work elsewhere? How important is being able to work remote (at a location of your choice, not at client /travelling) a few days a week to your job satisfaction?

I miss my workplace, I'm not a very sociable person but working from home from the last 4 months have made me realize how important it is. Whether it's shooting the shit with a co-worker or having some informal conversation with a senior while you're working on something, these little things adds up. This is just me & others can have a different opinion or preference where they'd want to work from the comfort of their home.

Very important. This arrangement greatly increases my quality of life. Even when I was in the office, I would typically be hoteling on a different floor than my team and would only interact in person with people a few times a week (most of which were pointless and could have been done over email). I wouldn’t mind going in the office once a week (maybe twice) but any more than that would be unnecessary.

The opposite actually—if we went to a fully remote model I would likely look for a new job that was at least half time in office.

Love working from home most of the time and not wasting time commuting for no good reason, but I miss having the option to go to the office and change up the scenery.

I really like working from home and if forced to come back to the office, would leave for another job.

I think it totally depends on your personality- I’m an introvert and absolutely love WFH. I have work-life balance, I can go outside whenever I want, and my only coworker is my loving husband. I am so much more productive now that I’m not preoccupied with what I’m wearing or awkward side talk. It makes me thrive. However, I know the extroverts in my group are slowly withering away and hate this, and I legitimately feel bad for them. Hopefully with a hybrid model, we could have something that suits everyone.

like

^exactly! I’m totally fine continuing with remote work. Would be great to have a mixed remote/onsite model with 1 week on site each month.

I can set up my workspace at my home. Thanks. And yes, I save ton of $$ for the firm. So keep your travel yourself please!

Can’t take this much longer. Please let me go back on-site and physically talk to people.

I enjoy working from home more than being in the office, but also admittedly my office is really dysfunctional, disorganized, and a large number of employees are unhappy and spend most of the day complaining to others. So I’m happy that WFH makes it possible for me to get away from that. However my work demanded that we all return to the office in early May. We have full remote capabilities, they just want us physically in the office at all times. I’m in a state where coronavirus is currently spiking. Since the return to the office, I have been looking for employment that will allow at least partial remote work.

like

Important to me. I have a nearly-1-year old and getting to have time at home with her has been invaluable. Before this even started I was thinking about setting up a formal 2 days/week WFH arrangement.

like

Not really few days a week but i would like a world where maybe twice x year you can go work for a week in another location so I could spend one/two weeks in Singapore/NY/HK without consuming the (very few) vacation days I have. I know it's the exact opppsite of what you asked but biz travel is something i like a lot and i hate that it's disappearing in favour of remote communication and that jerk of covid only accelerated the process.

like

My optimal arrangement would be WFH 2-3 days a week. This makes it easy to plan long weekends away with it without taking time off. And when this is the culture, you can usually find opportunities to work remote for extended periods of time as not being on-site for a month distills down to only a few in person missed days. Heck it's preferable to taking 2 weeks off with no on-site and no communication. Obviously depends on type of project and how be accepting the client has been to a scenario like COVID where we haven't been face to face for months.

Bring back travel and the office pls

I honestly really dread working from home, because I live with my parents right now and feel like I can’t work peacefully. Not to mention the many times they’ll walk into my room without warning. I think I would switch to a different company if they went fully remote, except I don’t think that will be an option for most banks / PE shops.

The way you've framed that, it is a living situation problem not a working situation problem. Surely you don't plan to live with your parents forever. Although I understand your response in light of the immediate future plans for how your current firm handles the transition back to work. But quite honestly, I would expect much more WFH in the coming year than for the long term policies.

like

WFH 3 days a week, office 2 days a week. I’d actually be happiest working from home full-time, once weekly travel to the client picks back up.

There is a paralegal (not mine) in my firm that is making everyone miserable. She cries at her desk, complains about being overworked and is rude to the other paralegals, staff, and a couple of the attorneys. My request was granted, and last Friday I was in the office to make sure several motions were filed properly. Continued in comment:

With all this extra, often unnecessary, communication while my company works remote, I’ve been having an awful time getting actual work done. So I’ve started to block off major chunks of my day every morning and put up an autorespond message saying I’m focusing on a deliverable, but will be available to respond at x time and if it’s an emergency to text. HOLY SHIT. What a game changer. I can actually get work done guilt free. I realize not everyone is able to do this, but if you can, do it.

Need counsel: Left advertising to go client side last year. Working at a huge company isn’t for me long-term but the money is great, I have more balance and actually raised my kids this year. I have the opportunity to be a c-suite leader at a very small agency on the rise. Super confused. Money will be less, long-term opportunity will be more. Also thinking about having another kid soonish.
