Let me just point out that for the average working actor, commercials are just the starting point for your career. Or you book a commercial for extra money. There might be a lot of intentional BIPOC casting happening in our industry, which is great, but the goal for actors is always going to be lead role on a series or film, and those are still overwhelmingly going to white guys named chris. But at least we’re helping BIPOC actors beef up their reels, and we’re increasing visibility in a huge way, which matters. Ads are seen on way more screens than TV shows or films. So we can view the sea change happening in our industry as one that makes (and will continue to make) much bigger waves.

I mean nobody really wants to talk about it but it’s really comes down to income equality. Pursing a successful career in the arts: acting directing / producing / etc, it really helps to have financial support so that you can take that leap. But random copywriter on the internet, “plenty of artists / creatives don’t come from money and make it” Sure, but a strong majority have the money to not only take those acting classes, or enroll in that advertising portfolio school, but to not have to worry about supporting their parents, or taking that min wage job to make ends meet, etc etc.

For groups that grew up with no representation in media, it is hugely important to see that corrected. As a white man, there is no shortage of characters, political figures, or professionals who share my demographic. To see yourself represented in those roles, even in a fictional space like an ad, expands your idea that such a role could be played by you.

It's the correction of discrimination. I swear nobody pays attention during unconscious bias training

No, it's not reverse discrimination. White folks still have a lot of representation in media whereas poc representation is just getting started.

A person can’t be “diverse.”

Asians are POC

Discrimination is discrimination. There is no "reverse discrimination" The reverse of discrimination is inclusion.

I think like affirmative action it's kind of a ham-fisted solution to a real problem. But the reality remains that as recently as a few years ago diverse representation in commercials was really poor, and I'm not sure if there's a more elegant and better solution out there than the ham-fisted one. If there is I'd love to hear it.

For years and years and years the default was white, mostly male unless they needed boobs to sell burgers or something. I’m cool with a hard shift to correct that.

like

and do short “brown” males, cause that would be profiling in a way.

It gets me so upset” “Isn’t this reverse discrimination” boo hoo, save me your white tears. You have no idea what exclusion feels like from a race perspective, it is NOT possible to feel it simply because yt’s cannot be hated for their skin tone. Exclusion to PoC is entirely based on bias and histories of racism, so to ask for more non-white, female people opens doors to those who are historically excluded in the field. Damn, you give a little bit of opportunity to PoC (a drop in the ocean might I add) and you have people crying like it’s the end of the world. Get over yourself.

Diversity: white, latinos, females, asian, black, indians, disabled veterans, etc.. it does NOT mean go all “black” and forget about others.

It’s reverse discrimination.

This is the same line used by the Right to bemoan the teaching of systemic racism. “When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.”

It’s just a needed over-correction. It’ll swing back to a different ratio eventually- but hopefully one that was better than what we had 10 years ago (or even 2 years ago)

Diversity is important but as soon as it becomes checking boxes and choosing people based on that instead of performance it doesn’t feel right to me. Every series now has a token white person and it’s just so obvious and fake it kinda grossed me out, it grosses me out because all brands and the entertainment industry care about are demographics, not inclusion. Also, if your idea of progress or “correcting society” is to see a black woman in the AT&T commercial maybe you think advertising is way more important than it actually is.

like

What’s your solution then?

Think about latinos, asians, indians, females.. the goal is diversity in perspective.

likesmart

I have a curious question to this. If you’re doing something for a Latino market.., how would you cast it? Director?

So you don’t know how to cast a Latino(a)

You’re giving opportunity to people who haven’t had the chance - which will open the door for others and give them a reel that then can match what you need in the future. It’s not rocket science. Up until now white men have predominantly gotten the opportunities so of course they have more experience/“better” reels. It’s the equivalent of asking for 10 years experience on X product segment for an entry level position. It’s just not fair. It’s a needed overcorrection and it kinda just is what it is and white men can deal with it.
