Not a legal recruiter but unfortunately I don’t think this is uncommon. I had a similar experience (followed by other subsequent issues). I’d write them a final email saying you’re disappointed with their lack of communication and will be seeking out another recruiter, and will assume that they have not submitted your materials to firms x y and z unless they respond and tell you otherwise. And FWIW, I’d invest your time in finding attorney contacts at the firms you’re interested in rather than finding a new recruiter....

Agree with associates above, but just like lawyers (and I am still one technically, even after 6+ years recruiting), a few bad apples can stink up the name for all of us. A good recruiter won’t ghost you and will be direct about your ability to make a move and their ability to be a resource to you. They will also help you clean up the mess the first recruiter made. Hi - I’m a legal recruiter and am horrified, but not surprised, to learn of your experience. I practiced law for many years, both at a firm and in-house, and have over a decade of recruiting experience. I understand your frustration. If the first recruiter applied to firms with your permission, a second recruiter can submit you but if within a certain time period of the first submission, the law firm may respond that they already received your materials from someone else. If that happens with a firm that you did not give permission to submit to the first recruiter, the new recruiter should be informed so they can respond accordingly.
