Hi! I have two offers and I’m not sure what to do. One is with a small firm that serves as outside counsel to medical practices (leasing, employment issues and acquisitions are primary work load) and the other is in-house for a pharmaceutical company (managing outside counsel, vendor contracts, privacy). The firm pays much better (1800 hours, flexible wfh) but I feel like the experience in house would go further in becoming a GC down the road. Please help!

Your instincts are right. Go to the company. Learn and develop your network. Pay cut is not forever.

Thank you!

If you want to be a GC a the in-house option is definitely a better choice. Also pharma bonuses are usually crazy

In house for sure. Less silo work and it puts you on the right path for your future goals.

Hello Everyone,

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Hi! I recently moved in-house as an entry level attorney. Prior to that I was working in biglaw in a foreign country. My GC now asked me to set FY 2020-21 goals. I have no idea what to say as I just started working here and have no idea what to expect in the future. Would love to hear some of your experiences and any advice I can get on this. Thanks so much.

How soon is too soon to switch jobs? I went in-house a year ago, after five years as a MidLaw litigator. I always aim to stay at a job for at least two years, and not to move until it’s necessary; I also wanted to stay in this job for awhile as I’m still learning how to be in-house and have lots to grow. But the culture is poor and pay is average. Does it look bad to leave after 1/1.5 years? Is the stink of such a departure significantly lessened at the two year mark? Thanks in advance!

I'm an in-house counsel at a national company. Our GC is leaving. I’m the only other in-house attorney, and I’ve only been here for 4 months. I like the job. Previously, I was a 6th-year associate.
