Hi! If a new firm asks you to start conflicts before any formal offer is extended, is that a sign that you are likely to get the job? Is it just to get the ball rolling? Does it mean nothing? Ty for the insight! (This may have already been asked but a quick search didn’t render my exact question).

They usually don’t waste their time running conflicts if they arent getting an offer together.

Thank you!!

It’s a good sign. But you still need to pass conflict and need to finalize terms of a deal. Don’t give notice or start slacking until you have the signed offer letter in hand

I've heard of this, but IME the offer comes first.

I had to do conflicts before formal offer but I did receive a heads up that offer is forthcoming once I completed conflicts. So I think it’s a good sign and you can probably ask about “timing” to gauge their level of interest if you haven’t already

Thanks everyone!

Anyone have an SO who is a healthcare worker? Sucks. Can’t decide what to do. Already dealt w/ 2 quarantines b/c of his kid

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

Mid-level here. Has anyone gotten their firm to approve their doing work at a deep discount and, if so, what strategies did you use? A potential client approached me directly about a small matter (~20 to 30 hr amicus brief). The potential client (gov’t) pays a standard rate ~40% lower than mine, but I want to take on the project because it would be a good professional opportunity (e.g., high profile case & client) and of course the lower rate won’t affect my comp directly. 🤷‍♀️ All advice welcome!

Question for the Biglaw Bowl: How common is it to take a pay cut when being promoted from associate to income partner? I had heard about this happening at some lower ranked V100 firms. But now that I’m more senior and my friends are making partner, it sounds like it’s a lot more common than I thought and happens at firms where I wouldn’t expect it. Does anyone here have any insight into this? How common is it, how much of a pay cut, and how long until your pay catches up to associate pay?

the main partner I work for hasn’t been giving me consistent enough work (or type I want) so while I work for him still on some deals, I’ve had to go and get other work from other partners. He doesn’t regularly check in on what I’m working on. He keeps volunteering me for projects without checking if I have capacity and if he expected to know everything I’m working on… he would’ve thought I was just doing nothing the last 2 months.
