First, if your husband is on paternity leave, he should be the one doing 95% of the baby care. Just because we are still working at home doesn’t mean you can just do childcare during the day when you’re supposed to be working. Once your baby is mobile (if they’re not already) it will be extremely difficult to focus on work while watching them. You may need a reduced schedule if you have no childcare once his paternity leave is over.
Second, establish a schedule for nursing or pumping. Being the only point of contact shouldn’t be a big deal. In a typical workday you would pump or nurse three times. Block your calendar for 30 min each at those times. If you feel comfortable being on a call while doing that (video off), do it. Otherwise, tell people you can connect at all other times.
I’m saying this as a working mom of 3 who pumped for over a year with each kid (pre pandemic, so we were all in person). Yes I had to step away to pump, or alter my pumping schedule if a meeting was running long, or awkwardly tell a partner I had to use the mother’s room in the airport when traveling together. As long as you get your work done timely you will be fine. Not sure why you’d turn down a project just because you’re a mom.
Thank you for your inputs!
My understanding has always been that I need to get into a project at work whether I’m a mom or not a mom. However, I have been in the consulting industry for over 10 years now and have worked on multiple projects. My experience has been that long term projects with adequate resources gave me the best work life balance.
On the other hand, short term projects felt rushed, disorganized as the leadership too is under pressure and just needs somebody to own everything and finish it to an extent that testers were asked to gather requirements themselves and do the testing. Also, most of them had unrealistic deadlines where we were expected to work off hours, weekends and do 2 people work due to budget constraints and what not. So, my questions was more on the suitability of this project at this point of time as the firm always have other projects and importantly, I’m exhausted to pull off a one woman show.
