I graduated from portfolio school in 2009 when the economy was collapsing and nobody was hiring. It was hard. Most people I knew who got jobs were willing to move to random third tier markets. I went into survival mode and just took literally any job I could to avoid defaulting on my loans. I temped as a file clerk. I worked in a doctors office. I sold all my childhood toys on eBay. Eventually got some freelance work mostly in-house. It took me forever to get an agency job but it was a good fit so I started producing work I was proud of almost immediately. My best advice is, it’s ok to feel like you just need to survive right now, keep in touch with your friends from school, don’t compare yourself to other people and keep trying.
I feel you completely :( I also graduated from portfolio school in March and at times everything just feels so hopeless. It’s one thing if we could do something about it but it’s out of our control which makes it worse. I try to just take it day by day...find happiness in the little things. And distraction helps too (for me that’s Animal Crossing lol). And other times it’s allowing myself to not do anything at all. The expectation to do some bs corona work is not my thing so I’m just trying to finish up a project for a student award...which also feels pointless. So I totally get you. If you’d like to talk, feel free to DM me :)
But feel like junior positions are going to get competitive because of the amount of graduates from different portfolio schools coming out now vs. open junior positions. There's also this expectation that we're supposed to have a "groundbreaking" work in our portfolio during this pandemic. I graduated in March during the start of the pandemic, and I'm constantly fighting my anxiety and depression. How are you guys handling your mental sanity during this uncertain time?
