Hi, I'm an Asian student studying advertising. What has your experience been like as an Asian working in advertising agencies?

When I started out as an AD I tried my best to out comp and out concept my peers, for me, that was the most effective and efficient way to advance

Not a lot of Asians in advertising in general, but not terrible. You do have to be conscious of how you are perceived - have to push back more to be heard and not seen as someone who “can’t sell” or “present”. You will be seen as a hardworker but not a leader and may not be first pick on the pitch team. Stay strong - it’s all about taking down the stereotypes!

I don't think we do get the fame like Latin or Black, but also they don't see us as aliens, which is better.

It was really hard to get my foot in the door because it’s sometimes about who you know vs what you know.

Also was at an agency that relied on me too much as the token POC.

But my current place is great.

That’s because all the other Asians are busy being doctors, lawyers and engineers.

It’s tough. I think you’re sometimes criticized more on everything. You’re often seen as a threat especially when you’re doing good work. It also depends on where you’re working.

It’s important to work at a place that values your work so you have some support. Makes sense but I think it’s more important as an Asian.

I have worked with just a handful of Asians and minorities in my career.

Being overt, shout back, and not timid.

Has anyone ever felt like some of the feedbacks you received is because you are Asian? Like i keep being told that I sound unsure, unconfident and not poised enough.. I've been told once that I didn't have enough presence on a call but.. I did the presentation so I talked 90% of the call..
