I’m only a few weeks into the in-house world and I have to say that it kicks ass. I get to spend real time learning about how our business works without worrying about billable hours. I’m sure I’ll become more jaded as I go on (as lawyers do) but I want to take a moment to appreciate it.

I’m the sole in house counsel at my org. Basically I’m building up the legal dept from zero. Curious what you all recommend for systems, processes, policies, best way to organize file systems, databases, best books to read, and general recs on best practices and tips. Thank you in advance!

Contract flow downs question. We are selling equipment to Company X so that they can sell to Company Y. Company Y is trying to push some owner flow down provisions to us. Our initial contract with Company X doesn’t include those flow downs. Would you push back? Is that standard/necessary for flow downs to go that far? Any insight is helpful.

I’m interviewing and considering leaving the law and nice in-house job (work 20-30hrs/week, clocking out at 5pm, no evening or weekend work, comp $215k, doing mainly commercial, though not much mobility) for a business-side role within the cap markets team at a fund doing structured finance. Many unknowns, but comp will be at least $400 base, $200 bonus, soon managing a team and serious career progression, more hours/week (TBD how much), plus deal driven. Any thoughts on making this switch?

My general impression is that for L&E, companies tend to hire more senior counsel (5-6 YOE) instead of junior (3-4 YOE). Is this true, especially at FAANG? Thanks!

Need advice: Received a race and gender discrimination complaint from an employee involving 2 company C-level execs, one of them to whom I report. Usually I would conduct my own internal investigation. Since this involves the highest levels, I can’t escalate it, I’m not an employment law expert, I’m a generalist. My plan is to involve our outside employment counsel. Usually I go through one of the execs before interacting with outside counsel. (Continued in comments)

I dnt want to tell anybody in real life that I got offered a new job bc it’s not 100% finalized yet but I am absolutely bursting w excitement and had to share somewhere. After a full year of job hunting and facing rejection after rejection after rejection , I just landed my dream in house position! Not only is the company and role perfect for me but I’m getting an $80k salary increase. For those facing career disappointments, dont give up! Better things are coming your way!

Question for GCs - what kind of training did you wish you had received from your law firm (assuming you moved straight from a law firm to a GC role).
If you grew into a GC role from other in-house roles, was there additional training that would have made your promotion easier/smoother?

Would this be a bad time to switch positions for the purposes of career progression and higher compensation? My current position seems stable but no room for growth and also a disorganized mess, not a very mature legal department. On one hand I’m the only that knows what they’re doing on the other hand i would like to go somewhere where I can learn more how a mature legal department should operate within a legally savvy business. But seems like a risky move in this economic climate?

I recently got a new job at a startup. I have little to no experience in reviewing commercial contracts but the sales pitch was that they are going to bring my area of expertise inhouse and until then, I would learn and help with contract reviews. Initially I thought this would be a great opportunity but now overwhelmed & doubting if I made the right choice. Learning a new area is so hard(!!). Esp so b/c I still get recruiter reach out for opportunities that better fit my profile.

Big law associate about a year away from partner, but considering taking an in house offer at a public company with small legal department (would be GC, paralegal, and me). I’m excited about the opportunity but worried about new responsibility leaving a narrow practice area (lending) into a department where I’d be somewhat on my own handling all types of legal matters. Hopefully just imposter syndrome but anyone start in house in similar boat and how did it go/any advice?
