No. What’s the point of staying if you’re miserable? Life is too short for that.
Your job takes up a lot of your time and while you don’t have to absolutely love it, it shouldn’t be something that makes you miserable either.
Thank you for saying this
Do it!!! I’m going back to school to become a teacher too :-) tax just isn’t it
Oh god, good luck with teaching. It is also terrible.
well - you need to do what is right for you. If you hate tax/audit, seems you'll just be miserable if you stay. You likely considered this, but now you'll have more tuition to deal with and in the art field, your comp potential is very low. Will you be OK making far less than you do now with little chance of any meaningful increases over your entire career. I know money isn't everything, but personally, I would be giving a ton of thought to how you will meet basic needs
My thought is that I could always come back to accounting if I absolutely can’t make ends meet
Have you tried a change of location? I thought I hated my job but it turned out I just really hated where I was living. I was in the same boat as you last year — new, completely virtual, living in a city with no friends or family and it was worse than awful. Just moved back home almost 2 months ago now and the difference is night and day
Sounds like it’s time to make a change then! You know you best at the end of the day
Not if you are miserable and you are comfortable with living on what I would presume would be less salary…then follow your passion. The damage that you are doing now to your physical and mental health is not worth it. If you can afford it…go for it!!!
Thank you for this reply🥺🥺🥺 needed to hear this. It absolutely is making me miserable right now and is costing me my mental and physical health sadly. I just want to be happy again

Not crazy at all to want to be happy with your work. We spend way too much time at work to hate it. Of course think through all the practical stuff and logistics - can you afford to go back to school? Are those programs competitive to get into? Are you Ok with making (I assume) a lower salary after graduation?
So I was you 5 years ago. I had started with a big firm, and although I wasn’t virtual (which I know comes with it’s own bunch of obstacles), I felt very isolated and just generally felt like I didn’t belong there and therefore couldn’t enjoy the work. Thought about leaving many times in my first year but after the first year I became more settled in the work and became more confident in myself, and have now been with the firm over 5 years and am actually so glad I didn’t leave in that first year. I wouldn’t say to stay in a job that you truly do not feel good doing, but also reflect on what specifically makes you not enjoy it? For me I just felt very lost in the beginning and also really alone (all the people who interned together knew each other whereas I started FT straight out of college). So a year or so into it I felt more confident in myself and generally more comfortable and actually started enjoying the work. Also as others have said, def think through the pros and cons of leaving for sure. Good luck with whatever you decide!
The weird (or sad and confusing) part for me is that I have made great friends with the ppl in my start class. We got pretty close pretty fast after DU training all together. Anyways I feel like I have friends that truly care about me at the firm which is great. It just makes me more confused why I feel so alone and why I feel so dumb. I feel wayyyyyyy more lost than them on a day to day basis
My son’s elementary school teacher was a tax manager and left a mid size firm to change careers and become a teacher. She has said that she is incredibly happy since the change. Follow your passion if you have the means and feel that teaching is your calling.
Thank you so much for this reply!! Needed this
