Hi Ladies! I’m transitioning to a manager of a team I’ve been leading. There’s been a lot of turnover with the team and I feel like I’m having a hard time getting the team to see me more as an authoritative figure. For example, when I ask for volunteers on a simple task, no one replies. Should I just resort to assigning rather than asking? Also are there leadership books you suggest that I could read up on? Thank you!

Yes, definitely assign. Don’t ask for volunteers. I personally like it when the manager sounds like they’re assigning it to me for a reason like, “I’m assigning this to you because you did a good job with xyz and this is related.” Or “This isn’t related to your regular work stream so this is will be a good learning opportunity.”

This is a great approach! Thank you!!

Assign tasks, and encourage people to speak up if they feel overloaded. I've also included a picture of some of my management and negotiations books for your reference. They each take different approaches to how to deal with people in different situations.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! Can’t wait to look up these books!

I'm going to disagree about asking for volunteers, but instead suggest you watch your language around how you do it. You're not asking if someone can do the task, you're simply ask if anyone has the desire to do it. "We're aligning tasks on this call. Here are the tasks choose which tasks you will commit to owning."

Once you set expectations differently and they respond then you can ease up later. For now, you have to shift to a more directing stance while also recognizing their value.

I'd highly recommend you read the second edition of The First 90 Days by Michael Watkins.

Good luck!

This is so AWKWARD. We had our holiday party last night and everyone was drinking (open bar) a group of us went outside to grab cabs together and go home, everything was cool. Tell me why once I got in the cab I got a drunk call from my manager asking if he could get a cab to my place and if I would give him the address 🤦🏻‍♀️. I'm single and not mad that he finds me attractive, more worried that all my other coworkers heard him calling me while they waited with him!!

Tired of all the respectability politics. Just once I want to write what I really mean in an email or tell a client what I really think of them when they ask. F*cking tired of walking on eggshells and constantly wondering if I did or said the right thing in the right way or the right tone to make sure the people around me are comfortable. Who's doing that for me at work? Nobody.

Anyone out there in a role like this? Any books. videos or even best practices to share?

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Need a quick point of view all - today on a group call, I asked a new c level male exec if it was fine for me to provide a client with a piece of information we had been discussing on the call (this required his approval). I have a face to face interview tomorrow and was wondering what the thoughts were wearing a nice knitted sweater instead of a blazer for an interview. My blazers don’t quite fit anymore and it’s not in my budget to buy a new blazer. I have one in mind that’s a turtleneck and can be styled with dress pants nicely. Either that or a cardigan….

Ok so. I have been on this journey for almost a year now to try and 'get to know and love myself' and I'm not there yet. I separated from my ex in March of 2020 and divorce was finalized in October 2020.
