NY Presbyterian / Weill Cornell. My friend had both her babies there. She paid extra for a private room.
I delivered both of my sons at NY Presbyterian (with Columbia Doctors). Great experience, private room both times, husband stayed with me the entire time (including overnight).
There are also good Grub Hub options nearby- we ordered several times from a diner (I forget the name) and got good food and my husband met the delivery person in the lobby. It was great for when the hospital food was disappointing and/or I needed more to eat and/or husband needed food because the hospital only provides food for you.
I haven’t had a baby in NYC but I have been told to avoid teaching hospitals.
Here is a decent article about Mount Sinai UES: https://pregsandthecity.com/2018/11/18/first-time-moms-guide-to-giving-birth-at-mt-sinai-upper-east-side/
My friend delivered there and says she wasn’t under the impression that the private rooms would be unavailable. Which month are you delivering?
I was originally going to deliver in UES as well but changed my mind.
Where did you go instead? How was the experience?
I had a good experience at Mt Sinai East, I delivered there in June. That being said, they did not have a private room available the first night, but I moved into one the second night (at $850/night). The nurses were great, esp in labor & delivery, and I felt in good hands with all the staff, from the anesthesiologist to pediatrician to lactation consultant. I think you will find horror stories if you look up any hospital online. Just luck of the draw if you go into labor on a busy day or not
Given that most are fairly equal in terms of standard of care, prioritizing a hospital where I have most chance of a private room and / can have my husband stay overnight. Happy to pay extra. Thank you!
I am friends with many obgyns. What I’m told is that one key factor is what kind of birth you expect to have. If it’s high risk and you currently have complications or unusual circumstances (eg twins), lean towards a teaching hospital like Sinai where they are working on the most complicated births. If you’re generally healthy and don’t expect any serious issues, going to a fancy hospital with all the benefits as mentioned above will be fine.
Thank you! I’m not anticipating this being high risk. What are some of the alternatives?
