Making it clear to leadership that that is the goal. Can’t have people talking about “I didn’t know.”

This right here. In every annual review, I mention the intention behind my efforts for the year as it relates to my career plan. This way looking back on each review tells a story of my progression and desired goals.

Unfortunately this plays a larger role than it should, in my opinion. To be clear, I'm not saying people who are jerks or create hostile work environments should move up in the firm. I'm saying that whether or not I like the same stuff as you, or watch the same shows shouldn't have as much an impact on my career progression...but this is the reality. So to your point, we need to acknowledge it and learn how to play the game.

Seeking opportunities to successfully perform at the level I'm trying to get promoted to in some specific areas. Then just delivering once I've been given the opportunity and making sure the people evaluating me acknowledge my accomplishments formally in the performance review process.

I would say focus not on just delivering from a technical perspective, but also from a soft skills / interpersonal perspective. It’s great if you can do the job and perform above expectations, but if you’re looking to get to the manager level and beyond, really focus on how you deal with objections, difficult convos, learning and contributing new & innovative ideas, and overall being that advisor to your team & internal /external clients.

How frequently should one expect or advocate for a raise at a small firm? I moved to a new firm (about ten lawyers) about two and a half years ago. After my first year I got a 20% raise following a brief and exclusively positive performance review. Its been about 17 months since then and silence. I have the general sense that the firm struggled a little financially during COVID and I don't want to seem ungrateful or greedy, but apparently the firm is doing well enough to hire more associates.

I’m up for promotion next year (will find out around February next year) and expecting my first baby in April. I get 16 weeks maternity leave and also considering whether to tack on a 3 month sabbatical or not. Should I take the sabbatical? I get 1/3 of my salary and can only use the sabbatical once every 5 years so I’m thinking it’s probably very unlikely I could take 3 months off in my career 5 years later….(cont)

Seriously considering buying a used camper, doing a light renovation, and taking it out west and just working remote next summer. Put all of my belongings in storage, set my parents address as mailing address, and just be a nomad for at least next summer. I would get a Verizon router for WFH. Am I crazy to be seriously considering doing this? Single M 🐠, 26.

Junior working with ex v5 senior in M&A. He consistently asks me to turn major deliverables at the worst hours, think 10 pm Friday/Sat/Sun night “tonight” or “by tomorrow morning” even when there is no closing date in sight. When I push back he says my behavior is unacceptable. The times when I have been able to actually meet his expectations and give him the deliverable for review, he will get back to me with comments at least a week later. Sick of these false deadlines.
