I live in Denver currently but I’m originally from LA. I love Denver because it’s a smaller laid back city compared to LA, very health conscious and filled with younger professionals. Like SC1 said, it’s not really diverse but I’ve never felt uncomfortable at all, & there is a small close knit community of black professionals. I also like that we experience all 4 seasons in Denver as opposed to LA where it’s summer all year round. It’s also significantly cheaper to live in than LA, & the public transportation system is better. LA is great imo because the food the great, the beaches, weather, and just overall things to do. Also not as many black people as you’d think it is but huge Hispanic community, and you wouldn’t feel uncomfortable either. Honestly the comment that the city is more superficial is something i hear from non-natives only. I never experienced anything like that. Cons are it is expensive, traffic is terrible, public transportation isn’t great.

This is extremely helpful as well. Thank you! One thing that worried me about Denver is the lack of diversity, so hearing that you’ve never felt uncomfortable is encouraging. So much to consider!!

I recently moved to LA from NYC a year ago. I think either PWC1 or M1 that mentioned you have to find pockets/neighborhoods are accurate. West LA, North Hollywood, Baldwin Hills and Culver City are great areas to live in. I live in the Valley and I love it out here. While LA does have a high COL and taxes, it was comparable to NYC so that wasn't a problem for me. I haven't experienced negative interactions with the people here, but most of the people I've interacted with are coworkers that have become friends and the people I've met in my neighborhood. The city does offer a healthier lifestyle than most of the other cities I've lived in (NYC, ATL, Ft. Lauderdale) which is a plus. The variety of food choices, things to do, and amazing weather have made my first year here a great one! As an alternative, I'd also recommend Charlotte, NC or Dallas, TX they were both on my list (2 & 3 respectively) before I ultimately picked LA. Hopefully this was helpful. Good luck!

For number 3, I would trade out SA for Houston or Dallas. SA isn’t that diverse and isn’t a good place to be single in.

Agree with this. Just moved from SA and can co-sign

I would say no to PHX and both Austin and SA. My friends who lived in PHX found the black people there “different” than other major metros. If you can skimp a bit on diversity I would do Denver instead of PHX if you want to be west. You already have LA on your list. You could also consider SEA but I didn’t see anything that far north for you. My friends are enjoying SEA and having fun dating. In terms of Austin and SA they are very diverse but not a lot of black people who you would probably connect with. Sub Houston before Dallas. Houston is a more transient city and the native Houstonians are much nicer and more welcoming than native Dallasites. I’ve lived in both places and had a fine time but I have established networks in both. My friends who moved to Dallas with no established network struggled a bit. Have fun!

Lived in Seattle for grad school. I personally loved it. The black young professional community is there thanks to Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Boeing, etc. It was easy to find a core group pre-pandemic including a church crew if that’s your thing. Plus the overall culture there is more progressive. I’m in NYC now, but I have a friends from Seattle who relocated to Austin & Dallas.

Coming from Chicago, LA has been good. It’s not Atlanta though. Most of us think it has a comparable population of black people, and that is false. There are pockets! The next thing to consider is the vibe. It’s different here in LA. The values are not the same. Visitors often describe people as flaky and superficial. I can’t argue with that. The way the city is so spread out, it’s very easy to find a reason not to go somewhere. That said, you can always find something to do here. In case you’re health conscious, there is no better place to be. The next thing to consider is taxes. It’s very expensive to live here. There are so many different neighborhoods to stay in. It really depends on what you’re comfortable with and what you’re into.

Good stuff!! Thanks so much. When 🤞🏾 I make it there, we’ll have to connect!

like

Definitely Austin or Houston

I’m around the same age as you and I live in PHX now. Sadly I can’t say I love it. Moved here from FL in 2019 and before that was in Philly for college. No community and very little diversity. Considering a move to Denver within the next couple years or so god willing after the pandemonium.

Thank you for the heads up on PHX!!

Avoid Austin, Houston was much better or Dallas

likehelpful

Lol, I’m glad to hear you’re happier!

I’ll piggyback on LA, I moved here 11 years ago from Houston (which I loved!) and have been living in Baldwin Hills for the last 4 years. I agree with everything the only thing I would add is the vibe is so different from area to area so you might want to sublet for a few months to a year and bounce around to different neighborhoods so you can get a fill for what you want.

Thank you for your advice!!

I just moved from Phoenix to DC for the diversity. I’m PHX there is lots to do, COL is low, but like the others said, there is no community and everything is spread out. Houston was my second choice to DC as I was really missing diversity after being in PHX. LA COL was so high and the pay wasn’t really matching up. I feel like you could find your tribe in LA but it would be a little harder.

I was there for three years. I can imagine COVID making it difficult to do things. I used to go to concerts and meetup events to meet people. Plus I had a few friends from college in the area.

like

Austin is not actually diverse. they just think they are bc it’s not converatove whites lol it’s basically like nova whites 10x maybe ATL? Sandiego? not really dieverese but good weather & lots of latinx

likehelpful

Charlotte NC. I’ve lived on every coast/region and it’s my favorite. Checks your list + affordable cost of living.

Adding that I currently live in DC proper.

I’m in DC and looking to do the same thing. My 3 cities are Sacramento, Houston & Fort Lauderdale. I could use recommendations too.

like

My friends in the Bay and Oakland have told me to not even consider Sacramento. They call it Trump County 😳

Lived in LA for several years and wasn't too fond of the traffic, COL, and transplants. Live part time in Austin and part time in SA now, and I love Austin! Liberal city, nice people, lots to do, great place to date. However it is getting really expensive. No experience living in Dallas but travel there for work quite a bit and don't think you'd go wrong there, either. Good luck!

Great info. Thanks so much!!

I love Austin! Been here permanently for a little less than 2 years and lived here for a short time a few years ago. Major drawback is the COL is skyrocketing and housing (for sale) is in short supply. Also love Dallas, never 'lived' there but was on a project there for almost a year and enjoyed it!

helpful

*cities I’m also open to recommendations on additional cities I should consider looking into. Thank you!!

Houston, for the reason stated above.

Lol Houston is as Texas as you want it to be. Its sprawl so if you want to avoid places/things you can, but if you want to line dance every weekend you can do that too. Really robust immigrants communities. I'm Nigerian and really love that about the city. Lots of people are very Texan, but others identify distinctly as Houstonians.
