Hi London 🐠
I am trying to move from Germany and land a job in consulting / startups in London, but having a hard time. I have a Masters from target Uni in Europe mainland, 3+ years of international work experience (US, Asia and Europe) in in-house consulting and currently at a startup. Any insights on what could be the issue? Is it non-traditional route or non-UK degree / exp that’s holding me back to get interviews?

Would really appreciate any advise.
Thanks 🙏

Just curious: is there any specific reason to move out of Germany?
I am trying to decide between UK and Germany.

like

Yep, I am sorted with pre-settled status.

Could be that people struggle to work out the prestige/reputation of the experience. We love judging people based on the reputation of their school and employers.

Eg. Most people in the UK have never heard of D-Fine because it's heavily focussed on Germany.

Otherwise it depends on your skillset. There are queues of young professionals with 'business skills' looking to get involved in startups.

It shows proactive hustle which people love but are usually too embarrassed to do themselves. Worst case scenario is people ignore you.

Highly competitive. In Germany all consultancies have multiple offices across the country whereas here the majority has their focus on London. With that a lot more people are competing for the same office. (I’m trying to make a career change and struggle to get interviews. Getting an interview in Germany was a piece of cake)

like

I agree. I turned down many interviews in Germany as I could not handle the volume after applying to various positions. Landing something in London is much more difficult but also much more rewarding in the longer run (always talking about people who are not German or UK citizens)

We’re hiring if you’re looking for strategy growth work. Your German would be a plus!

I’m German with pre-settled status too and went to a non-target university outside of the UK. I’m going through the interview process for consulting jobs at the moment and haven’t encountered any barriers but a few things come to mind: 1) at least from your responses here it seems you’re perfectly fluent in English so assuming that wouldn’t be a problem? 2) If you’re not living in the UK currently and don’t make it clear on your CV/application that you don’t require a visa, they will most likely assume you’ll need a visa and could reject based on that.

Visa can be an issue since 01.01.2021

Sure, then it should not be an issue

Curious to know - is pay and savings better in Germany vs in the UK. Also is German language a barrier to get jobs vs no such barriers for jobs in London

OP most people commute 25-45 minutes in London so 1H is really not that much...London is huge! I think everyone in this industry can live a pretty decent lifestyle. You may not have your own flat in Zone 1 but few people willingly want that anyway.

Where are you having the biggest issues - consulting or start-ups? With both, I’d suggest your starting point should be your network in order to get a referral. Both these types of organisation are looking for outstanding talent and I’d humbly suggest that the normal application process is going be a difficult way to distinguish yourself, especially in the current job market. We have record unemployment in the UK at the moment so being outstanding is even more important than usual.

Consultancies are also feeling the squeeze so your prospects may also depend on industry alignment. Eg there is demand for security cleared people to work in government but good luck if you’re a manufacturing sector specialist because that industry is on its arse and not buying consultancy!

On the start-up front, my sense is that start-ups are rarely interested in hiring people with more than 3-5 years experience unless being pushed to do so by investors e.g. a start-up I work with, has a semi-retired CFO who’s been put there by their major financial backer.

Thanks to everyone who has so generously replied and helped me. I am genuinely even more excited to move to London at some point soon as you have such a helpful and friendly crowd over there 🙌

Thanks again for all the tips! For anyone else reading this here, I ended up getting offers at one of MBB and Tier 2 in Germany. Never heard back from the referrals for London offices, except for ACN Strategy. Gonna start here now and potentially transfer in 2 years or look again with that pedigree under my belt. So, any German folks out there, good luck and definitely try to network. It was definitely harder to get interviews and offers for me in the UK. Cheers

Did my decision round with BCG and came out feeling meh. The interviewers pushed me a lot (made me brainstorm on where to start until I found the right place) and didn’t really work with me through the case (just let me go on even if my I was a 0 off in my calculations).

Is this normal? The experience was vastly different from my R1.

I have a few questions for people in consulting roles (both external/internal).

My partner is in corporate banking, but he wants to switch to a consulting/strategy-based role. I noticed people with those jobs typically have an MBA, and also majority of the job ads in similar roles has MBA as either a requirement or preferred qualification. So:

1) does MBA actually improve someone's chance in getting those roles?
2) are there any good Canadian MBA programs you'd recommend?

Thank you all!

To be clear there are BD managers and practice managers I work with on the pitches so I'm not doing every single thing.

Additional Posts in Londoners in Consulting

Hi everyone,
I Received a first offer from Deloitte 2 weeks ago that I countered and they accepted to raise it.
The recruiter in charge of my case was on holidays and he came back to work last week.
Sent him two emails asking when I should expect the new set of documents, but no reply until today.
Is this normal? Does a new offer necessarily have to go through the same steps as the first one ? Because I waited 10 days between the verbal offer and the written one for the first time.
Thanks!
