I’d say stick it out. Personally I’d kick myself if I left and they ended up getting acquired and I lost out on the $100k - that’s a down payment on a decent house. If a large tech company is reaching out to you, that’s not the last time it will happen. If I were you I’d reach out to the recruiter and say it’s not the right time and you want the experience of seeing your company through. That way they don’t waste their time and you don’t waste yours.

You can always decline an offer in style 😎. Ask for a higher pay, something which you think they cannot accommodate. Companies do not tend to blacklist candidates. You usually blacklisted if you did something really stupid during an interview or while on the job. Not accepting an offer is not bad. You can always be genuine about it and tell them you just started at this small start-up and want to get a feel before making a jump to another company. If they really like you, you may be able to reapply in the future.

I mean - you can tell them in good faith that the timing isn’t great for you to leave because your company is in the process of being acquired by a FAANG and you can’t realistically walk away from your options which are worth $X. If they really want you badly they’ll match what you’re walking away from; if not, I think a good in-house tech recruiter would understand the timing issue and say “Contact me when you’re free to leave.”

I’m in the uk btw. Mostly concerned about getting blacklisted if I turn down an offer, also could all be for zip if the acquisition doesn’t happen.
I’m happy in my job as well.

Do you think I should say anything to my current employers, some way to wrangle a few more options or bump my salary a bit?

The standard response to this is “no, not unless you’re ready to walk.” But if your company is in negotiations to get sold, they may actually be locked in to their current compensation and in no position to change anyone’s compensation until their review period has passed!

I recently left biglaw as it was taking a major toll on me mentally and physically. It was the right decision but I make much less money now. I come from a poor family and support my parents. My dad retired late last year due to health reasons and was extremely stressed about the economy and thinking about going back to work. I comforted him to not stress and we’d figure it out if that happened. Now, I can’t help but feel guilty that if I was still in biglaw I could have eased his worries. :(
