I did IT consulting at PwC and joined my current SaaS company as an implementation consultant. My company has its own professional services arm so the transition to industry was really easy. I spent a year and half learning our software platform and networking outside of my department. Eventually an internal posting was made for my current PM, I applied and got it.
My advice is to get in the door of a software/tech company doing something you’re currently positioned to do. Once there, work towards getting into a PM role. Many companies don’t look outside for PMs if they don’t have to. In my case, they needed someone who already knew the software platform, so the position was never posted to the public. This is by no means the only way to land a PM role, but it worked for me
As far as skills go, process design is pretty fundamental. Even if you’re not super technical, just need to understand what your target user does (day to day), the pain points they experience, and how to design a solution. Easier said than done, but the key to success is being able to iterate on the fly as you incorporate more feedback. I’d recommend reading “the four steps to the epiphany” by Steve Blank to better understand the process and skills needed in product development
Thank you for sharing!!
I did it by going from digital strategy consulting to corporate strategy, M&A. Spent time working across the business learning strategy amd aligning with a group before finding a product management opportunity that fit my interests - digital / tech. All of the above comments are very wise and useful and I dont really have much to add, other than my path. Good luck!
That’s my fear of leaving consulting for PM. It feels like game over 😂 I guess the grass is always greener on the other side!
