Hi mums! Due with my first child at the end of July and always thought I’d only take 6m off (I’m in the UK) but everyone is saying to go to 8-9m as they are still too little at 6m. Any advice? Thanks!

Candidly, at 4 years or age, I still think my child is to little. 🙁. Do what works for you. You need a good support system to make it work. Find a good daycare or nanny and trust your instincts. I know people who have gone back to work after 3m, but they figured out work and childcare. Suggest figuring out a childcare arrangement that you are comfortable with and then make a decision.

I’m at home with my two month old. He’s super boring. They get fun around 6-9 months and even more as they get older. I’d rather go back at 3 months and then take off 6-9 months (versus be home 3-6). Right now he just eats, poops, cries and maybe sleeps!

I’m pretty sure at Deloitte if you take off more than 6 you get bumped back a promotion year so folks don’t do it that often but that could be a rumor...

like

M1 - where did you get that from? D UK has seen many M on mat leave for 9-12m with promotion to SM during that time. Also think that the majority take 12m and anything less is more “uncommon"

like

@ OP - I would take 12m if I could

Do your best to plan now as everyone says but be willing the rethink - you cannot fully anticipate how you will feel. And don't let the judgement of others dictate how you are "supposed" to feel at any point. Nothing is harsher than the judgement of other moms when you are doing something differently than they do or did.

I took ~9 months (pre-consulting) but found myself wanting to go back earlier. I started feeling restless at 2-3 months but had already committed to the longer time. IMO having trusted childcare is the most important piece of this- I knew my baby was being well taken care of so I didn’t mind traveling or being away for work. Thinking ahead, hardest part of going back early for me would be pumping.

like

If you can, I would plan on 12 months, knowing that you could go back earlier if you feel ready for it. You will just be SO tired all the time, and while that may not change at all over the next few years, I thought it I felt significantly more rested/not feeling like a zombie/back to my old self around 12 months. Like previous folks have said, figure out your childcare plans early on and make sure you’re comfortable with it!

like

Yeah I’d play it by ear. I went back at about 5m and that was what was right for us. On the one hand I thought I would want to take longer, but on the other, I was dying to get out of the house and get back to work. So it’s a super personal decision when you go back, and it’s hard to know in advance

Thanks all! Super helpful!

With my first I went back at 3.5 months because I was so ancy to get back to work and out of the living room!

Super agree with D2. We’re at 10 months and I wish I was taking off time now as oppose to time earlier. I super enjoyed time with them over the holiday break

Take off as much time as you can and work/laws allow! I agree that the first 2-3 months were a real struggle with baby not doing much other than eating/pooping/crying/sleeping. I had to go back (in US) within 4 months and my son was finally getting more active and fun to be around and I was bummed to miss out on that! I wished I had the first 8-12 months off to spend more time with my son, but putting him in daycare has also really helped his development/skills and I love that he has had that exposure to other children. Also, pumping at work and with travel totally sucked and I gave up breastfeeding earlier than I wanted....

Being a consultant in the states, if I could have 12 months, I’d take it!

Moms, I need advice. I’m one month in at D (previous consultant, spent last 5 years in industry as a leader of leaders) and came in at Mgr - and I *hate* it. I’m 13 weeks with our first and mat leave was a huge factor in coming to D, so feeling trapped. I spend more time dealing w/ asshole client SM (not my project SM) than doing work. My coach is great, but her advice was basically, “D is full of assholes 🤷🏻‍♀️, get used to it.” Is it too soon to leave? Especially pregnant? What to tell recruiters?

Hey mamas, Anyone have recommendations on how to increase milk supply? I told you I had to leave at 5pm today. I had another $75 added to my daycare bill this month for being late at pick ups. Don't look annoyed that you didn't come talk to me. I can call you from the car.
