Is a HRPB higher than an HR manager ?
I'm a big supporter of protecting your peace; say what ever it is you're able to say without stressing yourself out too much. The truth is you don't owe them an explanation other than this isn't working out, and it's not your responsibility to educate or fix anyone.
Practically speaking - write it down, say it out loud, practice it with a friend. And then just get it over with and leave them behind. Life is too short to let small minded racists make us miserable 40 hrs a week
Periodt… I’m gonna write it out
There is a great breathing technique called boxed breathing. Imagine drawing a box with your inhales and exhales. Four counts in, hold the breath for four, exhale for four, hold the breath for four, and start over. Do it four times. I do this before I have to do anything emotionally challenging because it flushes hormones from the brain, calm the body and brain, and my brain is oxygenated properly allowing me to articulate my message.
I also practice what I’m going to say multiple times which allows me to be succinct and clear. Trust yourself and if you start to waiver during the discussion, take some deep breaths and tell yourself “I am safe, strong, and important “. I know…this sounds like a silly concept, but it works. You have lots of champions here to support you!
No, this doesn’t sound silly at all! I actually do this breathing exercise sometimes! I’m gonna start doing it more often and I also do affirmations as well! Thank you for the advice
Honestly you don’t even need to give a reason why you are leaving. I would personally just tell them for personal reasons.
They don't deserve your time or effort to EXPLAIN to them that they are racist. Let them figure that out on their own - I would gtfo of there and take care of yourself!!
Hey, I just want to say that I am extremely sorry that you were a victim of racism in your workplace. This is not something anyone should go through in 2022. I hope you find the time and space to heal from this!
If you have the opportunity to share your thoughts in exit interview or with HR or a safe contact you should. If you are already leaving not much harm can come to you from it and how can it ever change without awareness.
That being said you don’t owe them an explanation if it’s not safe enough for you to do so. Good companies take these matters seriously.
I’d be honest and let them know. It doesn’t mean they’ll agree but that kind of crap needs to stop. Plus it’ll probably save them from a lawsuit in the future.
I'm so sorry that you are currently experiencing this right now. Just tell your leader that you want to quit. You don't need to explain every single detail. Best of luck!
Coming from someone who does Exit Interviews frequently - more often than not, managers and even team leads don't realize what they're doing until they hear that people are leaving because of their actions. I'd encourage you to be open and be the person that creates a safer space for the next person if you're comfortable doing so.
