Hi Partners, what are some of the main differences between being a Managing Director at Accenture and a partner at a private firm? What are the pros and cons? I’m on track for Senior Manager this...

...year (or soon) at Accenture and next would be MD. Sounds like partner is a good gig, but I’m skeptical whether MD at ACN is worth it. Curious to hear your thoughts

It’s worth it. Benefit structure is different than a private company though.

How is it different?

Thanks A1. Curious about the differences. Sounds to me from my reading that the benefits for MDs center around stock grants and a similar minimum buy in at the beginning. No pension (which would be fantastic...). Also, anecdotally, it seems like the MD position is more fickle/less secure than a partner position. In some ways, it seems like MD is high reward ($$$) but relatively high risk (no defined benefits retirement package, no mandatory retirement)—what’s the draw of MD?

No MD buy in from what I understand. You get a restricted share bonus that vests over 3 years, but because we're not private, there's no buying in. That said, there is a strong stock purchase match option (way better than ESPP) that incentives MDs to invest in the firm.

Serious question. As equity, does it concern you employing individuals that live paycheck to paycheck? People that would do anything to keep their job first and foremost where improving returns to equity is a very distant priority. I’d view it as a liability, but can’t really ask people to divulge his or her financial status.

I've heard multiple people say at a certain age, it no longer makes sense to make partner. What does that even mean? I know you typically have to be a partner for 10 years to fully vest in the pension. But even if I were a partner for just 2 years, isn't it still better to be a partner? Year 1 partner comp might be almost same as your comp the year you made partner due to health insurance and buy in, but it's not like you're worse off as a partner. And you get your buy in back when you leave.
