Hi. Please for the love of god stop saying something “should only take x hours”. It never does! Ever! You guys suck at forecasting work, and for every additional one of you on the thread, add 30% to the runway.

Thanks.

Hi. Please for the love of god stop whining and get going. If you spent less time crying over the estimate you might actually get it done in time.

Thanks.

P1 is right. Also, you shouldn’t be so literal about it. When I say things like this, I’m mainly trying to guard against order of magnitude problems. If I say it should take 2 hours and it takes you 4, whatever. Your couple of extra hours aren’t that important to me. What I really mean though is that if you plan to spend the next three days working on it, we should have a conversation because you’re doing it wrong.

Also, please stop using empty buzzwords that only complicate conversations with clients. They/we see right through your BS.

Most clients will take your 60% work and partners know it. Work with the MVP in mind and you'll hit deadlines no problem. If you try to do more than the minimum or insist on constanly preventing re-work, you'll burn out eventually--that's engineering not consulting, and requires engineering timelines and resources.

But partners, if you're consciously in the business of always fixing rockets with duct tape, shame on you. In the vast majority of cases your clients, your staff, and even your firm are all worse off for it in the long run.

Maybe you suck at doing work??? Maybe if you focused on your work rather than social media, you could meet your deadline???

Need some advice. I just accepted a new position that starts later this summer at the beginning of July. Earlier this year I was approved for 2 weeks PTO at the end of June/early July (getting married). Where I'm at now they do not have unlimited PTO, so there is nothing they owe me when I leave. What would be the best way to handle putting in my 2 weeks notice if I want to try and still get paid my PTO before I leave?

Is consulting not for me?
Moved recently into consulting and lately I've frequently been feeling anxious and upset and this has escalated in a period of downtime when we don't have many jobs on and many are on the bench. I've mostly been on the bench for about 2 ish months now and my prior engagement was an 8 month project with a distant, hands off manager where I frequently felt lost, misguided and unsupported as a new consultant (previously doing well as a big 4 senior in audit) (see below)

I want to try my hand at being an account executive, I’m not sure if being in sales in a different industry would help me at all. But I’d really like to know what their day to day is like, how deals are structured, if leads are provided and how pay is structured. Thanks guys.
