Hi! Please recommend what to learn to get a great job in backend at a great company. You can choose any techs. You can suggest courses, programs as well. If you think apart from just learning backend Language i should learn other stuff as well like database docker K8s aws Kafka temporal bigQuery, please recommend everything because I literally have no idea about the BE world. If you can’t suggest courses, you can tell me the techs to learn but pls include every tech literally each n everything.

For more mature companies, Java/Spring or C#/ASP.NET Core. Smaller/newer companies may do Python/Flask or Node/NextJS. Learn about n-tier architecture and domain driven design to start. This will later springboard into microservices.

You can't learn everything at once. Databases, docker and AWS are a good start. Don't touch K8S until you're very strong with docker. It's pretty hard. Don't go multicloud (GCP/bigquery) until you're comfortable with the first one.

Second this. Better for deep throguh understanding than hitting eveyrhting superficial

Just pick a language, and get really good at understanding the how everything connects. Get really good at object oriented, understand design patterns, and practice refactoring your code. All of those key components that are going to help you regardless of the language you end up sticking with. Start also learning about databases and how to structure queries. Start learning about cloud computing. I'm not telling you to be an expert in all of this, just learn just enough to be useful to a company. Once your foot is in the door, work really hard and absorb everything

SQL!

funny

Start with SQL. Pretty much any and all backend jobs require it at some point. Then pick one of Java, node, python or C#, there's tons of work in any of those. Docker for containers. Or, if you're looking more to the future, look into streaming techs like Kafka, Flink, AWS Kinesis/Firehouse and then something like Databricks or Snowflake for the data engineering.

Think about what you enjoy doing and the problems or puzzles that keep you engaged and then what tech stacks excel in that space. Everyone has their favorites languages and platforms but once you understand methodologies and processes the rest is just language.

Focusing on the how’s and why’s will guide you in making better decisions on what technologies to use. With the plethora of DB platforms a lot of people don’t find the right DB for the purpose and nothing worse than getting deep into development or into production to learn that the system fails at scale because the wrong tech was chosen.

Don’t fall for Buzzwords, I remember when Hadoop was going to solve all large data problems. Dozens of technologies exist now to solve the same types of problems and many are easier. It did open the world to more affordable distributed processing and storage.

Learning backend is a journey that takes time. Find a mentor in your space and absorb what you can. I worked with an individual that would stay online during their night just to work with me and learn. They just did a presentation on Scala at their new company that was well received.

I got an informal offer stating the salary range before they officially extend a written offer. I accepted over email and the recruiter said this:

Are you comfortable accepting at the (lowest part of the range) and everything else listed? Or would it need to be on the higher end of the range I suggested?

What the heck do I say while being polite??? Of course I would rather it be higher than the lowest part of the range!!

The interest rates will go up - given that we have serious inflation - pretty soon. Long story short, we may be looking for a lost decade in 2020s in terms of S&P500 returns. What do you think about it?

I'm hiring and I've just learned that my HR department is screening candidates by asking them about very specific functions and frameworks.

"Can you describe your experience using Element#remove()?"

"Can you describe your experience migrating from X framework to Y framework?"

We don't use Y framework and have no plans to use Y framework in the foreseeable future. I also don't expect candidates to have all functions memorized. How on Earth did they find out about Y framework!? 🙄🫣
