Our problem is finding people to fill open positions. However, in an indirect way, it is a funding issue because we can't afford to pay paras what they are worth, so they go find other jobs that pay better whether that's at a different district or a different field entirely. Case in point, my 17 y.o. son makes more per hour working at Walmart stocking dairy than we pay our paras.

In our case it’s the lack of staff that’s holding us back, we can’t find people.
That's a problem too, but things have finally gotten a bit better in that regard. At least they could let us post the position...
I read recently that the federal government is supposed to pay 50% of sped costs but they only pay 13%…the majority of the cost falls on the district. I’m starting to think that lawsuits are what we need at this point. It’s going to take some really angry parents to change things, but I just hope teachers don’t get thrown under the bus in the process.
This is what I'm thinking too. Decades ago, the state reimbursed 70% of special ed costs. Now it's 30% or less. And it keeps getting cut because the state government keeps getting away with it.... Nothing is going to change until it costs someone money.
Same- teachers leaving, sub shortages ( in one school, admin assistance walked out and so did 10 para professionals, teachers lefts in a slow stream the entire year.
I have had no Speech therapist at my school since September. My self contained students are each 1-1.5 hours per week of direct individual services. Just a nightmare. Parents are all limited or no English speaking families, and of course I can’t tell them! Such a shame!
We are short paras. Nobody is applying. Pay is bad so I see why and then the ones that have been here for a while are horrible. It’s like having another student to deal with. How do you lose kids walking from the lunch room back to class?!
Ours is also finding staff, we have enough funding, but a lack of qualified people who want to work.

What's a good district or charter to work in GA. Raising a young family who would attend school.
Same
Yes. and we have no subs here, because surrounding districts pay subs more. The district is starting to hire unqualified bodies just to have someone
Agreed we have funding but are severely understaffed. No one is even applying for positions and our pay rates are high
I work special needs McDonald's pays better.
