Hi there. a bit of a vent so if no one reads to the end, that’s aok. But I first interviewed for a general finance role for a startup about a month ago with the CEO. I’m early in my career and he knew I didn’t have a ton of experience but I was excited/willing to learn. Since then, I’ve had conversations with 7 others for this company of <50 and even used some PTO to visit their office. I’m a ‘great fit’ but just got rejected for a lack of experience; am I missing something?

They could’ve handled it better on their end, especially after all the conversations and visits you had.

It’s worth reaching out to ask for feedback, what are some things you can work on, and opportunities to stay connected in the future (whether you mean it or not). It’s possible they ran out of funding for the role, oorrrr they have poor hiring practices and communication. You’ll find out if you ask.

As a general comment though, I don’t blame small startups for being choosy, so don’t take it personally (easier said). They only have so much funding and time and possibly don’t have time to teach new hires everything. They may prefer people who can hit the ground running.

like

Thanks for taking the time; but I can be pretty sure the funding side didn’t impact things. They’re pretty well funded and we’re open about that from the start. I posted a decent amount of the rejection note in a prior comment. Hopefully that either provides context from their side or maybe explains some of the confusion from my side. Thanks again!

Hi all, just to follow up, I did end up emailing them for general feedback and ways to improve as a candidate and haven’t heard anything lol. Either way, big shoutout to the hitters at C-ESP. Doing gods work out there

like

Have they provided any explanation whatsoever? Did they hire freeze? Did they decide not to hire for that role altogether?
I think it’s only right that you ask for an explanation. If they ghosted you, however, then it could be that it’s in your best interest that it didn’t work out.

The note reads like they liked you and may have talked internally about how to get you set up for success in the role and who would manage you, but maybe they just couldn’t work it out due to competing priorities.

No harm keeping in touch and moving on to other opportunities. Good luck!

Is budget really the reason or am I doing something wrong? How do I finally get that promo? Been regional ops (13 states) for 15mo and Director slotted for 9 now.

Honest opinion required from experienced people.....

I am currently drawing 16.5 as an Associate Manager 2nd year have told them to kindly correct 2 3 times to SM in SAT domain. This is the 3rd year have told.

Can anyone please suggest what would be the median salary in SAT for this level. I presume it should be 25 to 30, i am sure this year it is again fake promises and they can't suddenly pull me in this range from 16.5.

Honest opinion needed, waiting for Sept then will start looking out

Additional Posts in Career Pivot

Would anyone be able to provide some insight on how a person who has over a decade of experience working in CPG as a senior leader can pivot into a similar role in tech? My wife is a respected senior manager working in an industry where she has vast experience developing physical products (ie. Food, fragrances, personal care) and managing a team but is considering a pivot to the tech world to lead and grow a team. Any thoughts, guidance, ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.
