Continued: I love my compliance role but the fully remote positions in my organization are in IT fields and I know for certain I do not want to leave my current company because I love it. I actually love my job too and will have a hard time leaving it but remote work will never be allowed in this team. I have my analyst background and I’m trying to figure out how to leverage that to transition to a business analyst or product manager role in that IT setting. Any tips? Anyone made that career shift within the insurance industry?
If there’s an BA role in your current organization, you can easily make the pivot into BA. For the PM role, unless you have managed projects and worked in IT in a previous job, I don’t think you can transition into PM easily. Feel free to DM. I’ve done this transition before so I can speak from experience.
I don't know if it's worth it to go into tech just to be remote. There are tons of roles that are fully remote that require your expertise. I would more so look for ways to upskill what you currently have and maybe leverage some tech certs to help boost your resume within the tech industry
Have you tried exploring other companies that are insurance but offer full time remote positions? Companies like Principal Financial Group are much more remote friendly post COVID. Getting into the IT space simply because it’s full time remote would be a total gamble in the best possible case scenario.
Spend some more time considering this, network with some folks in that area, send a message to colleagues and mentors to get their input. Perhaps schedule a meeting with some folks in that space and talk to them. Time and time again, I’ve learned that the duties listed in an official job description are just a fraction of what you’re actually expected to do. As nice as full time remote is, it is completely pointless if your job makes you miserable. And if your work makes you unhappy, I promise you that’s going to trickle down on your relationships with your husband and family.
I’d speak with your manager directly about the desire to work remotely. If you have a trusting relationship with your leader, the conversation should be easy. What’s the reason behind not being able to be remote? Perhaps you can commute 1-2 days per week instead of 3? If your manager values you, they should consider this. Much more expensive to try and replace you!
I have had several convos with my manager. The decisions is simply not theirs. It is decided on an executive level and no one in our department is allowed fully remote work.
