I've managed to stay local or only very occasional travel for almost my entire time at BCG (including pre covid) have been in a large office and flexible to work with different teams, industries and roles. More learning curve but has been ideal for me
Short term— there’s flexibility. Long-term, there will be travel to some extent. Also depends on your role/project
Rising Star
It really depends on the company, industry, geography, team, type of work, tenure, performance, and client culture. If you are in NYC, focused on finance, with a an established client who doesn’t care about face time and your are a top performer or manager who sets the meeting cadence - limited travel. If you are in NYC focused on industrial goods with clients in the Midwest working on an transformation that requires a lot of in person meetings and you are a junior team member then you will travel. The advice that I was given is be clear about what you are solving for but be ready to accept that you will have to be flexible on other parts of the job. For me, the level of uncertainty from project to project and the extra pressure of navigating this along with other work pressures made me go to industry. That being said, spending 2 to 4 years in consulting opens a lot of doors.
thanks all for the responses. very helpful!
would anyone be willing to have a chat with me?
