Going rate is $20-30 in San Diego for 2 kids. We did two rates but moved to one flat rate because it was just easier (she picks up and drops off older kid at preschool with the younger in tow, and is our backup in case the older kid has to stay at home per covid rules), now at $22 per hour in our second year with the nanny. Standard benefits here are two weeks paid vacation (1 week is parent choice) + 10 paid holidays + 5 sick days and guaranteed hours every week so even if you’re taking extra vacation you still pay the nanny. We give an annual bonus of 2 weeks pay at Christmastime and raises on anniversaries. Given gas price increases we started giving a stipend of $100 a month since she lives about 30 miles away, not prompted but felt fair.
I’m in Chicago and had a similar situation (2 kids, roughly same ages) go anywhere from $25-$35/hr depending very much on experience and expectations of role (will they be doing pick up and drop off once preschool starts?, etc.). And yes, we had separate rates for hours when it was one versus two. It was a little to manage but most weeks were pretty consistent.
In terms of benefits, I highly recommend drafting a contact (I think we used a template from care.com but you can find them on many nanny sites). We included two weeks paid time off (one based on our schedule and the other totally up to nanny). Also five sick days. We did not do health insurance benefits as she had them through her husband, but would have considered at least contributing if she hadn’t. Bonuses at holidays. I think those were the major benefits.
If we call off, we pay our nanny. I know most people don’t. We do this for a few reasons:1. It hard to expect people to truly rest and recharge if they don’t have any income (esp. annoying if you didn’t get to decide when you weren’t working), 2. If we’re getting paid for the time off, I think it’s stingy to not pay the nanny, 3) in our first year with our nanny but expect the practice to drive loyalty
In addition to paying when we call off, we offer 5 vacation days in our contract
