Hi this year my school went to full inclusion therfore my mild moderate self contained class was dissolved as my students were pushed into general ed classes. I am now called an inclusion teacher. Anyone else experience this? If so what are your thoughts? Thanks!

In the beginning, I was suspicious of the move to inclusion. I thought my students would be bullied or joked about. But I was happily surprised that they try to learn as hard as their non disabled peers. They gained solid friendships and academic progress was made in all areas! However, these students exhibited mild learning disabilities. Moderate to Severe students continue to benefit from self contained classrooms. Just my opinion.

I think for most students this is a great move! Inclusion is so wonderful and I want my students to be integrated into general education as much as possible. I worry about the students who truly need a self contained class due to behavior.

At LAUSD, the superintendent recently announced we were moving toward full inclusion. My question to you is how do you feel about this transition? Pros and cons?

All schools in our area of South Jersey are pushing for the same thing. They've received some pushback from us, resource room teachers, and parents with students who truly learn better in a resource room for math and language arts. It's great in a bigger district when you can hire an inclusion teacher and still have a resource room when needed. Our students sometimes get left behind when they can only afford to put an aide in that inclusion room for one or both periods of math or language. We had a 6th grade that should have been split in two and has grown even bigger, so the 3 students we had in inclusion with IEP's really benefited when we split into a resource class after a few weeks this year.

I like teaching both, BUT getting a regular ed teacher that genuinely wants to split the class when needed, can make centers and small group work is hard in the middle school mindset in our old-fashioned small schools sometimes. It's also hard when you have to teach possibly teach two subjects and up to three or four different grade levels each year depending on what is needed each year. You never get to use old lesson plans or develop one subject into what it could be like subject specific regular ed teachers. It's so nice when you gel with someone and it just flows! There's a couple I have worked with that I wish we could make it work each year, but then they only have 1-2 IEP students and you have to move to a class with a bigger group. We're like bouncing balls, never knowing what you're teaching from year to year.

What is inclusion? Sped student are in regular education classrooms. Included! Simple What is inclusion teaching , Do you co-teach, same prep period? Are you the behavior enforcer? the baby sitter? do you work with all student Inclusion? Only sped student and they want you to pull them out? So many items not discussed yet expectations are high. Does inclusion work for all NO

I’ve had to do 11th grade science classes with kids with ID and Multiple Disabilities. There’s good and bad. Exposes them to material they may not normally learn about, but said material may be way over their heads. It HS to be on an individual basis

We are starting this next year.

Be on the lookout for Attribution Bias in yourself & on your team. It's a hindrance to creating a high-performing, inclusive culture.

Any agency in Chicago hiring for Diversity & Inclusion and open to actually addressing the challenges and make change? Bonus points for an agency that allocates a proper budget.

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. Does anyone else wish their school had been more up-to-date on STEM when they were a kid? I went to college with some kids who had been practicing and studying code since middle school. I learned about it from the internet in high school enough that I wanted to go to college for it, but I still feel like I started behind everyone else regardless of gender.

Hi! First time working with a larger company - suggestions on handling pronouns at work?

I’ve worked with smaller agencies where it was easier to bring up. Now I’m on a larger team, talking to/referencing people I’ve never met. I’m less concerned about my own pronouns and more concerned about how to make sure I’m using the correct pronouns for the people I work with.

I’ve been structuring sentences to avoid gender specific pronouns but would love to hear suggestions. Thanks!

My goal is to take the main ideas and bring the concepts down to the level of my students to keep them moving at a similar rate. Parents want to send their children back to school not only for educational purposes but also for social interactions. I do understand that many children want that interaction with their friends and teachers. But I don't think it is going to be quite as rewarding as many think with social distancing and face coverings to be safe. No high fives, pats on the back, sharing earbuds to listen to a new song, or consoling an upset friend. Even facial expressions are lost. Tough times.
