There could be only one reason for that: they were losers. They were dimwitted, unambitious, complacent, unimaginative, and risk-averse. They were middle class.”

Lol Girl no. During rush hour you’re lucky if you can get a place to stand let alone work lol those people more than likely are talking about the LIR or NJ transit.
Hard no. On the 456 I was lucky if I wasn’t breathing in someone’s armpit
You can use an ebook reader on the subway, even during rush hour. You may need to get your technique down, but it’s doable.

My commute is my favorite time to read
I sometimes just concept and write ideas on my phone. That’s the closest I can get to working on a train. Also try to avoid using your laptop on a train in general.

Yes, absolutely. Books take up no space
and they make the train ride go faster.

It depends on the train and it depends on the time. Any of the MTA lines during rush hour? Probably not. Non rush hour? Yeah, probably.

I always read the newspaper on my phone on the train. Don’t expect to read anything that requires two hands, unless you’re getting on the train at the first stop and know you’ll get a seat.
Depends on what stop you get on. If you live near an earlier stop and you can always get a seat before the crowd, then you can definitely read your nook. If not, then audio books or podcasts are better.
Can't do work on a laptop on the subway, and honestly wouldn't recommend it even if you could, but sure, you could read a book or look at some PowerPoints on your phone. I'd recommend Kindle instead of Nook, because you can sync between the Kindle e-reader and your phone. If it's mad rush hour and you can't even hold your Kindle, use your phone and then pick back up where you left off on the Kindle later on.
Thank you everyone, this was very helpful.
