Going in with a lower title allows you to build a network with lower expectations and should be easy for you to get promoted. Surely a bonus comes with that promo.
Not saying to definitely do it, but think about the upward mobility if you are high performing.
Every Big 4 M or SM I’ve known that has transitioned to MBB has gone in as an associate. Haven’t heard any regrets from them so far.
Is burning your network worth the pay bump? Don’t undervalue the internal value the network brings to staffing and support.
It’s something I have always had trouble pinning down.
Mck1- what’s SM of big 4=in Mck? Why EM is the toughest role? What EM is exactly doing what other M/SM in big 4c aren’t?
I used to worry about "burning the network" but then I look at some of my biggest cheer leaders, all ppl now very late SMs or PPEDS now were ppl who came to the firm as experienced SMs from another firm and they have done quite fine. It's easy to be scared of losing the network but if you do good work you should be ok. And your network at your current firm is not guaranteed to stay either so make an informed decision but make one that is best for you.
If you moved from M1 at PwC to S& you’d likely be an SA. Make the move. Zero downside.
*Meant thoughts on negotiating pay or title bump
Following
EY1 good point. I think I am motivated by moving out yes. Question is, is this move worth it? If not, what can I do (if any) to make it worth it
I don’t know which MBB you have an offer at, but an associate at BCG is someone right out of undergrad. Our salaries are all standardized and we don’t really do early promotions for associates or consultants. If you want to negotiate a pay bump, you would need to come in as a consultant or higher
If it is McK you should go
OP, Generally speaking, the “culture” differences are mostly felt around working style. Teams feel that folks not “homegrown” manage upwards more, pushback on team leadership less, work the teams harder, and more importantly have a harder time challenging the clients.
My contacts within the firm mentioned that the area I am being hired into is seeing some upheaval so there are no guarantees that I will have the support network to push for early promo come year-end. This compared to where I am at currently (fast track to AP/SM at current firm) giving me major pause. Is there anything I can get in writing/do right now, to avoid getting short-ended?
When you say ‘somewhat ok’ what do you mean by that?
EY3 10-15% base increase.
Purely from a career perspective, if you are able to do something cooler at MBB, I feel that's the right step to take. You can always build it up for a promotion and enjoy a bigger bump in the pay.
If you are an M1, I am assuming a recent promotion. Wouldn't be fair to compare your new comp to your M1 salary unless you have been an M1 for a min of 6 months. Just saying.
OP is talking about McK
BCG1 By Associate, I meant Senior Consultant equivalent.
EY3 I am a fast track promote and have been M1 for less than 6 months yes. Somehow having to start at the level of fresh MBAs does seem to be an undoing of efforts till date
What’s the next level after Associate ?
@A1: Engagement manager
