Hiring manager said “will be in touch” when I checked in for a status update three weeks after my final round interviews for a Director role. Gave me a detailed answer explaining why the delay is due to holidays/vacations; that there are three finalists and one will be chosen. I feel that if the hiring manager can’t give a clear timeline, then I’m not the first choice. Thoughts ? The very detailed response and explanation softened me up a bit but should I read anything into it ?

I've applied and networked for my dream job and didn't get an interview this time. Also dissatisfied with compensation and some of the responsibilities at my current job but have a lot of opportunity to learn. So the question is do I stay where I'm not thrilled to be now because it's good experience to set me up for the dream job next time there's an opening, or do I leave now to an option that's better pay and more interesting but farther off the path towards my long term goal?
