McKinsey & Company McKinsey and BCG consultants: how impactful would the difference between the two firm's flight policies (>90 mins business class for BCG vs >3.5hrs for McK) be to one's experience as a consultant? Do McK folks usually end up getting upgraded anyways as your flight status increases? Do BCG folk feel that the first-class perk provides them with a significantly better travel experience? Would love your thoughts :)

Not exactly a discount... but several years ago, Hilton had a promo for earning a free night after 10 stays. The free night could be any Hilton hotel, the stays could be any hotel.
I hopped among homewood suites and doubletrees every night on business trips for a few months and cashed it all in for free nights at the Waldorf Astoria. Had also hit diamond level with all those stays, so I also got upgraded at the WA.
I think they put in more restrictions on their promos after that.

My team of 6 were working in Edinburgh for a while. We were going to be flying in every Monday and flying back out to London every Thursday or Friday evening. Project was going to run at least 6 months.
I walked into the local Marriott (a pretty nice one) and asked to speak to the manager. Told him we were staying at a cheaper hotel because they meet the corporate rate budget.
Told him we book weekly for at least 6 months for at least 6 people, and he not only matched it, but also made sure I stayed in a suite every week I was there. Racked up a lot of Marriott rewards points as well 😉

Wasn't for the current stay but once at the Element in Hells Kitchen -- back in the SPG days -- the hotel f'ed up multiple times within 10 min of my arrival (screwed up rez, keycard they issued didn't work, left the showerhead facing out so I got doused when I turned the shower on when I was fully clothed and pissed off). I wrote an email, MOD called my room phone at 11:15pm to discuss. I was all "are you kidding me?!" Hotel manager called in the AM and set up a meeting. I got 50,000 points which I then used for two nights at the St Regis, where we got a free upgrade to a suite which came with a butler. Checked online, 2 nights was $5k with taxes. Walked out after two amazing nights and the folio was $0.

A1- "who f'ed up and put a lake right here?!"
I stayed at a St Regis in Abu Dhabi for $100

ACC. 🙂
Tip: if you can be patient, and you know your hotel is crowded, try and check in last. A lot of times they overbook and will end up putting you in the massive suites that arent usually booked. Happened to me at the four seasons boston, a very nice surprise.
I’ve been turned away before with a reservation. Maybe I don’t look important enough 😂
Simple. Got a terrible case of food poisoning from the hotel restaurant. Was holed up in the bathroom all morning trying to work out some horrific issues when the maid came sauntering in and caught way more than any human deserves to witness ..... oh the horror. One phone call to the platinum desk and boom - 2 weeks free. Best rate ever. As an added bonus, I dropped a quick 10 pounds and 2 waist sizes for good measure.
Rookie mistake ..... sigh
I had all of my expenses audited at a Managing Director’s request because I was staying at a Ritz Carlton while everyone else was at the Courtyard Marriott or Hampton Inn.
I’m in the National Guard and was using my military discount.

Government rates tend to be excellent. Stayed at the Four Seasons in St. Louis for $89/night. The Grosvenor House in London is also like 100£/night down from like 700£.
Friend’s last name is the same name as a top flight Vegas hotel / casino. Walked in there super drunk after striking out on Hotel Tonight and asked the hotel if they had Mr. HOTEL NAME’s room. The people at the front desk got a kick out of our shenanigans, must have had an extra suite, and comped our room stay. We jammed like 5 Marines in there. Good night.
Family and friends rate at the four seasons is like $90/night for a $800/night room 🙂
Yea it's tough. It's reasonable in these times. Hospitality and travel is significantly impacted in the times. I was able to stay at Toronto Four Seasons through perks. Very nice.
I stayed at the new Boston Four Seasons for work. Also amazing.

Was on a 1.5 yr long project where we could choose any hotel for under $200. Hilton had a "pay an extra $30 and get DOUBLE points for your stay". I would stay at hotels for ~$150, pay the extra $30 and get double points while also staying under the limit.
Racked up 25-30k points per week.
Stayed at the Delta Hotel in Toronto (Marriott property) directly across from CN Tower. At check in, was told to hold on, and General Manager comes from the back office with a guy dressed like a butler. He then thanks me for my business and hands me a piece of paper giving me 60k pts. Was prepared to spend 60k pts for the stay, but essentially walked away without spending any more pts than I had before. Also got upgraded to a suite.
Yeah they’re very hospitable, and the location is amazing
$35 at any Hilton brand... family owns Hilton brand hotels and we get employee rate discounts. Will be getting Marriot employee rate soon as well
Hilton FF is ok once in a while. Lol. Need to get that one too. Got choice and ihg.
I need to take a shit once I got to the hotel and shit on the bed. Told them it was there when I got to the room. Put me in a suite
Got a room that someone had smoked in, got upgraded to a suite and got points on my membership enough to stay a weekend at a Hilton for me and the wife. Didn't expect those bonus points but that was a nice gesture I since stayed at that very hotel every time I gone to that city.

Not smoke but paint fumes. At the Marriott Marquis in midtown Atlanta they were renovating and the room smelled like it'd been painted 10 minutes prior. Windows didn't open, demanded a new room. New room was identical in terms of smell so I complained again. Got upgraded to a Governor's suite. Sofas (plural) and chairs in a sitting area,6-top dining room, and a bar (not stocked).
Weirdest part was that it was all one long room and the bed was one of those hideaways so I slept that week in this cavernous 1,000 square foot room
TriBeCa SPG property - emailed the GM mentioned long term weekly 3-day stays and got a rate from another firm - I think Deloitte maybe KPMG ...Asked for consistency rather than quarterly fluctuations for rate due to not wanting to figure out my expenses each week since we had a similar rate. At the time worked for ACN.
Stayed at the Roosevelt (WA) in New Orleans for NYE one time. Going rate was $1200/night, paid 50k points.
Paid 60k points a night for a stay at the Ritz in beaver Creek over Christmas. Room was going for $2400 per night
Stayed at the Waldorf Astoria and met a cockroach the size of a small mouse. It was escorted out in a test tube by hotel security. The ordeal was accompanied by a phone call from the Hilton diamond desk...
...Yes, everyone but the roach. I used the points for a lovely stay in Peru :)
