Flying from ORD to DCA, flight was supposed to take off at 7PM, ended up getting delayed, we boarded, the plane had too MUCH fuel on it, so we had to deplane, delayed until 11PM, boarded plane number 2, but pilot didn’t have one of the sign off papers from control tower, so had to wait an hour and a half, then plane had malfunction, and we deboarded AGAIN at 1:30, flight was cancelled. I was rebooked one the next flight out at 6AM, slept on a row of seats at gate for 4 hours, woke up, showered in the lounge using the faucets, and then caught the 6AM flight home Sat morning and went straight to brunch and got shit faced
Op write them a letter
Flew a redeye Sunday night, airline made me gate check my bag and then completely lost it. I had to emergency shop for formal client workshop-ready clothes at 9AM. Airline gave me $1500 in reimbursement funds because the only retailer in my client area was a fancy department store. They also gave me $300 in apology credit. The bag arrived one day later and I got a new designer wardrobe for keepsies 💁🏻♀️
K5, not on company dime.
Guy in the row next to mine had a heart attack and died 30 mins into a flight back to the US from Argentina. Turned around and flew back to Buenos Aires as United put the corpse in a first class seat with a blanket over his head and the Argentinian authorities took statements from the doctors on board for ~4 hours before removing the body.
Seriously?
I was flying to FL in a red eye for a client and this really hit Brazilian guy sat next to me. Started chatting it up. He was on his was to Brazil and when the lights got dim we started making out. I was really big chicken to join the mile high club because not being able to fly (specifically my airline) would’ve really sucked.
Was flying DCA LGA Sunday afternoon (4p) then LGA STL Monday morning. AA and then DL. Pushed and storms in the area, 2 hour ground hold, returned to gate, flight cancelled, same scenario with next flight. Realized wasn’t making it to NYC so tried to go to STL, AA wouldn’t change destination since was booked DL out of LGA. Swapped to last DCA DFW Sunday night and DFW LGA Monday morning. DCA DFW eventually diverted to OKC, landing at 1230a due to storms. No gate for 2.5 hours. Slept on airport floor, rebooked for OKC DFW STL LGA leaving OKC at 515a. Shower in DFW never felt better. Of course didn’t take STL LGA leg. Worst flight nightmare so far.
Was flying from client site in Boston to San Diego to visit my family and (mostly) my beloved cat. Original flight was so delayed that I missed my connection. From there I was stuck in Chicago unless I wanted to fly into LAX the same night and then rent a car there to drive home to San Diego at 2 am. I did just that and after 15 hours of travel and not sleeping for over 24 hours I arrived to my family’s house in San Diego only to find out that my cat had died a week before I arrived and no one cared to tell me
Just got back from Colorado. We were hit with the bomb cyclone while I was there. Had to drive back to my hotel in a massive blizzard, total white out.
Get to the hotel and about 30 minutes later the power goes out completely for 4 hours. Finally everything let’s up. Power is restored. Roads are cleared. So I venture out to get food, I go to the only place open. The pizza place I ate at the night before. They were so slammed being the only place open, after a while end up helping them clean tables and do dishes. Finally get my food and head to the hotel to pack up for my flight the next day. And I get the text that my flight has been cancelled. I was flying southwest and all the max 8s had been grounded, not to mention the entire Denver airport was shut down that day from the blizzard.
So I frantically am looking for flights to get myself home. All $800+ and 12 hour + flight times and multiple stops. No thanks.
Finally find a flight with United that leaves the next day at 1:20. Head to the airport at 10. Still ice all over the roads by the airport. Finally get to the actual airport, and there is a massive line just to check your bag. Get a message my flight was delayed until 2:30.
Stood in this check bag line for 2.5 hours. 45 minutes before my flight the lady in front of me opens the crowd-control rope and shoved me through to go get my bag checked because she knew I was going to miss my flight if I didn’t get out of this line.
Check my bag, go through security, another 15 minutes. Then my gate is B90. The furthest end of the airport. I ran as much as I could to get there. I get there at 2:21 and the door is closed. No one is at the door. I look around for anyone that works there. There’s tons of people but no one who works there. I’m covered in sweat and out of breath. Haven’t gotten to eat or use the restroom for hours. I almost started crying after all that, to miss the flight. Some man came up to me and asked if I was here for that flight and I said yes. He said “it’s ok. They just got here. Haven’t even gotten off the plane yet. We are delayed again.” Finally get on this plane and sit in the runway for another hour. But thank god I finally got home
SC2, hugs your way...wishing you better travel the rest of the year
Called an Uber from ORD airport, after 40 minutes of back and forth on direction she shows up in the wrong pick up area. I walked 15 min to meet her down in arrivals on a different terminal. She apologizes and says she is new to Uber and driving and was a student and needed money. It was 11 PM, Was so tired to call another Uber ended up driving Uber on my own to my home and ask her to take a passenger seat. Call it a random act of kindness or for my own safety 😉
I would have canceled after 5 mins on the phone. 😂 But glad you decided to wait it out! Hope you had an interesting convo on your way home?
Traveling to India for a client visit (33 hours with layovers). BOOM : flight from Atlanta —> Philly (technical difficulties and delayed 🤦🏾♂️. ) Philly —> Paris was delayed then cancelled 6 hours later. Stayed over night in philly. Finally got to Paris but the layover was 5 hours... Paris —> Mumbai (another 6 hour layover) to fly 2 hours to Bangalore🤕. Overall, Ended up arriving in India 1 day late. I didn’t mention the crazy ride in the taxi from the airport 🥴
Was this a last minute flight?
Fell asleep after boarding - before take off. Woke up 2 hours later only to have never left the gate! Mid flight, asleep again, I’m awoken by someone passing out while walking in the aisle by my seat. Thanks Bose headphones!
I was on a flight back from Chicago to Minneapolis. Only brought what I needed for the day. Flew SW since we had a limited budget for a pro bono project. Storms in Minneapolis delayed the flight a couple hours and prevented us from landing after circling for a couple hours. All in all 45 minute flight was 4+ hours to Omaha. We were diverted and landed at 1 am. My analyst thought SW was making a joke with the announcement. Nope. Supposed to refuel and try again. Flight was cancelled when we landed and auto-rebooked on the first flight at 11:30 am. Grown adult strangers talked about renting a minivan to drive through historic floods in Southern MN to make to the Twin Cities. It’s about 6 hours. We discover nearly all of the hotels are sold out. I found a Holiday Inn 10 miles away and reserve a couple rooms and one for a friend we made who used to be a linebacker for Texas A&M. First Uber shows up after 25 minutes and asks if we’re okay with the smell of vomit and all three of us would have to squeeze in the back. Nope. Called another and got to bed by 2:30 am. When we arrived at the airport the next day, fellow passengers looked destroyed by sleeping in the airport. First project as a consultant!
We had a engagement with over 200 EY staffed. The client (a global CIO) wanted to meet each one individually. So we set up 3 minute interviews with all. This required a lot of standing around so we could get in and out efficiently. He asked every one the same questions including where we went to school and what our major was. I found this particularly strange as I was in my midforties. I'm not sure got thru everyone but sometimes the EY leadership would be told to roll someone off the project weeks later with no explanation - based solely on that 3 minutes
Twist ending: this is the same project with the bomb squad that the OP mentioned
100 percent true story
Here’s a great lesson learned. When I worked for a much smaller company (I was employee #8), Shortly after being hired I had to travel to San Francisco several times, each time for one week. On the third week I pretty much had the routine down: same hotel, same rental car, same airline, same flight. At the time we didn’t have corporate cards as we barely even had direct deposit, and just opened up our 401(k) accounts.
This was 1998. By then I had my Gold American Express card for almost 3 years; membership since 1995.
I think it was the third trip in when, after getting settled in my hotel room, I received a call from the front desk. They informed me that they were having a problem with my card and that I needed to call American Express.
So I give them a call and the reason why they could not pre-authorize the charges to the room was because I hadn’t yet paid my expenses from the previous trips, even though I explained the charges weren’t due yet. They felt that given my past history (and probably age, tenure of my membership, and length of employment) that I wouldn’t be able to afford paying for all the expenses that I had already occurred and were about to occur on this third trip.
I tried to explain that these expenses were all business related and that I would soon be reimbursed by my company. But for whatever reason the representative on the other end didn’t seem to believe me and demanded that she speak to the “person managing the books” for the company. Then I had to explain that I worked for a very small company and that the “person managing the books” for us was my bosses wife; she was human resources while he was the president and CEO. And I was #8.
And they were on a cruise ship vacationing in Alaska.
Remember, this was 1998. Even if you were lucky enough to have a cell phone, it certainly wasn’t going to work on a cruise ship. So although I had no way of contacting them, that didn’t seem to matter. My problem. Not hers.
So there I was clear across the country, in a panic, because I thought that I would be stuck there without a place to sleep or a vehicle to drive or money to eat.
It was 1998. Even though I stated my career in 1993, I officially earned my Computer Science degree in Jan 1997. So I didn’t have much cash sitting around. No stock investments to sell. No home equity for a loan. Nothing.
So I quickly decided then and there I would hang up on the person, call back, and maybe get somebody else that would be more helpful.
And that’s exactly what happened.
After explaining the situation, the representative on the other end was more than willing to at least give me the benefit of her doubt and believe my story and at least approve the charges that I would incur for the trip based on l my past history with them. Since then I’ve never had a problem and I share this story with every person in a similar bind or any young person I meet today.
And... almost 25 years later, I’m still an American Express card holder. However these days, instead of holding a Gold card...
I’ve gone Platinum!
I miss the 90s
We were on the runway but our flight was delayed in taking off. The pilot said over the speaker that there was a TURTLE on the runway that they had to clear before we could take off 😂😂😂😂 (in DC btw)
Ha! I’ve heard of this for deer, endangered frogs, moose, water buffaloes (my oddest delay in Indonesia) and even crabs so why not turtles too. However, aside from saving the turtle’s life, had it been ingested into an engine and cause damage at a critical stage in takeoff, it could have ended poorly for the humans too.
I was on a flight from Chicago to NYC. I fell asleep and when I woke up, they were announcing our descent into LGA; I sorta nodded back off. The next time I woke up, they were announcing our descent into BWI. Obviously, the flight attendant made a mistake right? NO, we got into LGA air space and hovered in the air for nearly an hour waiting to land due to bad weather, but the plane didn’t have enough fuel to stay, so instead of taking us to Philadelphia, Boston, or ANYWHERE in the northeast, they took us to Maryland. As we were getting off the plane they said to meet in baggage claim and they would tell us how they were getting us home. We got there and they told us that all of the airport type shuttle vans were gone to take another flight to philly and they would come back to take us (they didn’t sound too sure). I hopped into an Uber with 3 other strangers and we split the ride. We agreed to just go to LGA and everyone could make their own way from there (since that was the original stop). ~$240 split 4 ways if interested, apparently rides originating in Maryland aren’t that expensive. Had it originated in NYC it would have been nearly $500 (i checked out of curiosity). My flight was supposed to land at LGA at 8PM Thursday night, i finally got home at ~6am Friday morning. I’m just glad none of them were killers! Don’t worry I asked lol! Thanks United!
Met a guy while traveling to west coast who casually asked if I wanted to join him for this island trip. I accepted.
He is an ex commercial pilot with a private ✈️
The time l forgot my bag in an Uber at a morning meeting in the burbs and was flying out of MIA that day. Realized when I got back to the main office. After a huge hassle to track down the driver, he informed me the next passengers thought my bag was theirs when he dropped them off at FLL.
Hmmm I don’t believe that driver - he didn’t want the hassle of getting it back to you
Is this Hinge?
@OP - 👋 I remember that - I was on that project
+1
Another person grabbed my bag by mistake (non tumi and very different so not easy to mistake) and got off the plane. I caught up and pointed it out near the plane exit and they gave it back apologizing profusely. But the airline was having none of it. They took my bag back near the cockpit and asked me about each article of clothing and other accessories in the bag until they were convinced it was mine.
You didn’t have a tag on it with at least address information that matched you?
Flying back from winter music conference in Miami after a full week of parties, my plane home took off on time at 6am and landed in Detroit for an hour layover. The layover lasted 5 hours. We finally boarded bound for New York. When we are above LGA, the plane goes into a holding pattern with no announcements for 45 minutes. The captain finally gets on the PA “well folks... we miscalculated and now have too much fuel to land the plane here ... we are no longer allowed to be in this pattern and need to divert.. we will be heading to Syracuse”. Everyone groans. We land in Syracuse and everyone scrambles to try to get on the last flight to New York. It’s full. They put us on a bus two hours later. An hour into the bus ride the bus is having mechanical issues. They drive us back to the depot and we hop on another bus. The other bus stops at a rest area and we all get out to get food or go to the bathroom. I walk out and see the bus taking off without me (they haven’t been keeping a manifest for the bus ride) I’m running and yelling for the bus to stop. I catch up and get on the bus. I finally get home at 4am and have to be at work at 9am the next day.
I was on the infamous Delta dog poop flight
