Not a big deal. Be tough. HOA shows rules who follows the rules but useless for those who does not follow any rules. Tell them that you will seek legal action if they disapprove. I am not saying you will. But for the most part HOA is a pain just deal with it.
You need to read your declaration, master deed, or CCRS (whatever the governing docs are) and see what liability you may have opened yourself up to. I represent HOAs, and some are more aggressive than others. Most documents allow an HOA to fine you and then lien your property. And then possibly foreclose on the lien. It’s worth a consult from a local real estate attorney.
