Hoboken vs NYC? Trying to avoid the city tax and get a better priced apartment so wondering if the commute is worth it. Thoughts?

I live in Jersey City and love it - but then again my office hasn’t been enforcing any in-office mandates.

like

I live in the downtown area so there’s plenty to do - less than in the city, but still a good variety. It kind of feels like my friends’ neighborhoods in Williamsburg/Bushwick and Astoria - live on a more residential street but walk 5 minutes and there’s a bunch of stuff around.

It's not bad during the week, but on weekends and late nights it can be a pain to get into the city.

Fair enough!

Besides work location, if most of your friends live in Manhattan, you’re going to be heading into the city way more than they visit you. Like A2 said, the weekends will be a pain. But I absolutely feel you on city tax. It’s disgusting

I’m a data analyst in the data and analytics department at my company but I don’t use SQL/Python nor do I use data visualization tools. I’ve been taking SQL and Tableau courses on DataCamp but I don’t think I’m retaining much.

Tbh I feel very lost. Should I talk to my manager about this or should I just continue learning on the side? Any advice on how to actually retain the info?

I just find it weird how my title is a data analyst yet I don’t code/use data visualization tools. Help :/

Has anyone else run into this problem? Please any advice would help. Thanks so much.

The hostility on my team is rough. We have a yeller. I walked by her room the other day. She was screaming across the room at a student, "you have to be kind to get kindness." Seriously, those were her words in a loud, berating, angry tone. Our admin has asked that we not report these. We are to talk to the teacher. She has yelled at me and other adults. Admin has to know she treats the kids this way too. One teacher has to work with her door closed to not hear the yelling all day.

Are there any “best practices” as it relates to giving notice? Currently practicing in somewhat of a specialist group and lateraling to re-tool to a practice area I’m more interested in and also relocating to LA (where I’m from), so not necessarily competitive but I’ve been in this group for 3 years and have received very positive feedback on my work and built solid relationships/mentorships so curious if y’all have any pointers to avoid inadvertently “burning bridges” as they say…

2017 grad so technically a 4th year. Lateraled to a CRE boutique in NYC that’s a major player. Learned quickly that my experience/knowledge/organization is not up to par (was a COG in the machine at prior firm). Just had EOY review and, though positive sounding, they’re dropping me to a 3rd year to ensure I’m not billing as a 4th year and able to do the work to learn/get up to par. I feel pretty okay about it (market salary deduction notwithstanding), but want to make sure I’m not being naive.

2012 Sr Associate. Left my firm in February after being recruited by a partner I used to work for, and it turns out I’m not very happy. Difficult people, terrible schedule and ruined vacations so far. A partner at my old firm in another group has asked if I would come back to work for just him. I liked working for him, we have great rapport and I could do permanent WFH since he is in another city. I don’t want to burn bridges, would this be a bad idea? Or an easy decision?
