No shorts are covering for the weekend.
Every Friday people(banks,hfs,etc) who bet that the price of a stock will go down have to buy that stock at its lower price so they can sell it to someone for way more. In doing so it drives the price up. On Monday the process happens all over again, people(banks,hfd etc) take short positions driving the price down. However, in a typical market it isn’t as obvious as it is now.
Yes, of course- the press conference was a love letter to the markets.
