Homeowners question. We have an old AC unit that will need to be replaced in the near future. It uses the old Freon that’s been discontinued. Do people usually pay outright for a new AC unit or is there like some kind of insurance we can add on if ours goes out?

We had to replace ours about 18 months ago. We could have paid in cash but got a 0% 60 month loan. So we will pay it off before any interest is accrued and I’ve still got the cash to invest along the way. For insurance, there’s probably something but honestly those things do have a lifespan. Ours was 14 years old and we replaced it before it went out bc we knew it would be soon (others in our condo building had already reached end of life).

I’ve ran two window units for past two years because I don’t want to bite the bullet.

Have I got a story for you. To save time though, the bullet points are: I had Old Republic home warranty, my AC died at the start of a heatwave, Old Republic will only pay for their contracted people, their people took days to book, made the problem worse, and because of the torture that is living in a heatwave without AC I couldn’t wait weeks for them to send guy after guy to diagnose and attempt more patchwork fixes, ended up getting 3 bids all saying the same thing, whole thing is old and needs replaced, and ended up paying $8k for a new HVAC system and Old Republic comped me $900 because they said their people would have fixed it for that cost.

This was our experience as well. Save your money and time from the headache that is home insurance.

Home warranties seem scammy— I’d just be ready to buy a new unit. Summer’s almost over— hopefully you make it to spring

Some home warranties cover that kind of AC. We have Old Republic but there may be others. I know those services are fraught with horror stories but if you know the AC is likely to die while you own the house, probs worth considering.

Have you used them before? Or currently use them?

Home warranties cover that. Get one before it dies.

Buy a new one.

Got a home warranty when I purchased my house 5 years ago specifically for this reason. AC is currently about 25 years old and still going. BUT the warranty has covered a new pool heater, new pool filter and new pool pump. Not to mention other service calls (plumbing and electric). I’m one of the lucky ones I guess because I have heard some horror stories. I just hope when the AC does go they will again step up. Just read the fine print because I’ve heard some companies won’t cover AC units past a certain age (which is utterly stupid).

like

I think it makes sense to exclude AC units past their normal useful life. Or if not excluded, maybe prorated after a certain age. Warranties are intended to protect people again sudden and unexpected problems. You purchased your house knowing the AC was super old and would need replaced at some point in the near future

Thanks for the input everyone. It sounds like just purchasing one would be less of a headache. Hopefully, we can score something like D1 but we’ll be saving just incase.

Check with your electricity provider. Ours had a rebate program for energy efficient units with a certain SEER rating. Got $900 back.

If it’s a whole house unit buy from one of those reliable local HVAC companies that install the units . They usually also sell a warranty/service plan with the unit. It’s usually really cheap the first few years as manufacturer’s warranty is involved. My outside AC compress fan stopped yesterday (Sunday), called, and the tech was here and had it fixed within the hour. Good luck !
