I started the year rewarding those who brought in their home work. Then started having students who didn’t turn in homework do it during break. Something I read today was a good suggestion. Put their name in a lottery, and draw a couple names to reward. I do not grade homework. Sometimes we went over it together.

What’s their reasoning for making you give homework? Just curious... The only homework I ever assign is whatever they don’t finish in class, and in fact, our admin prefers it be that way

They believe that students receive extra practice in turn helping them boost their test scores but I do not believe that. I think reading at night for 20 minutes is enough!

I’d be curious to know why it’s a nightmare for you. I’m not a big fan of HW myself, it’s bad enough I have to plan for what kids do IN my class, now I have to plan what they do OUT of my class. Having said that, a few thoughts. 1. Give as little homework as possible. 2. Make sure it is purposeful and not just “busy work”. 3. Differentiate it if possible. Make sure Sally is doing something she needs to improve on and Billy is doing something he needs to work on. 4. Something I’ve seen that I like is creating homework “buddies”. The idea is you pair kids up and they check each other’s HW. If one has a wrong answer and the other has the right answer, the “right” kid explains the answer to the “wrong” kid. You circulate and facilitate as necessary. No “whole group” review of HW. I hope this helps

I am a hw stickler! It is a participation grade and I reward thosw who turn it in completed and on time. I have a hw ticket that i punch holes in. Once it is full they get a rice crispy treat. I have a paper for missing work, they have to write why they disnt turn it in, the subject and the date. I keep those for parent conferences when the parents question why their child doesnt get hw or why their participation grade is bad... This has helped wonderfully!

Great idea!

I gave a packet for the week, it was practice leading up to a quiz on Fridays. Otherwise, I made them complete whatever they didn’t do in class if I didn’t have a packet.

I always have students start "homework" in class and that becomes an incentive for students to get focused right away and stay focused. Other than projects or studying for tests, my homework tends to be what is not finished in class.

I teach sixth grade math..... hw is usually what doesn’t get finished in class. Every few weeks I do a spiral hw assignment, 9 questions each night that week and hw quiz on Friday over
